I found this knife in a box of tools I got at the auctions. Does anyone know what it is used for?

A cobblers knife?

edit: I remember having one in the family when I was young and recall it being known as a cobblers knife ... but a quick google doesn't look promising, so it might be something else Question

edit again when I'm awake in day-time Rolling with laughter
The one I had did have some similarities ie wooden handle, curved blade with oversized blunt safety end but the biggest difference was it was fixed blade and probably somewhat bigger.

+1 - especially as it looks like the handle has been painted orange so it is easy to see if dropped on the woodland floor. Otherwise a skinning knife of some sort, the rounded end with no cutting edge ensures that when used the blade cuts outwards through the skin & the point doesn't dig into meat (or worse if gralloching... Shocked ).

Hi,

It's an WWII R.A.F. Survival Dinghy Knife

Special knife issued with the larger multi-man survival dinghies. The knife was tied to the dinghy with a cord an came in a leather scabbard. Curved stainless steel blade with rounded 'safety' end. The bouyant cork handle and lanyard ensured the knife wouldn't be lost overboard.

You can find them on the internet using 27c/2023 and the word knife in google a defender from 1984 pretending to be a puma with a touch of Range Rover

As above
Life raft knife, blunt end so that you don't accidentally puncture the raft. Time is precious, waste it wisely...

I guess if you're lost at sea and come across a deer, you'll be sorted

Just Googled gralloching which sounded like it could be a particularly painful highland sport involving kicks to the scrotum area. What a relief to find it is just the name given for disembowelling animals. Confused

Hello foggydave

I think the boys are right...as I've seen the Police Water Rescue Team using RIBs
who train near us, use knives very similar to yours, also with an orange handle.

I have a French Pradines No.20 -11cm 'pruning knife'...(which is only used for Mushrooming)
which at first sight looks similar, but no, the 'non-safety' end is a give away.
