Fuel System Advice Needed Please
I have a 1995 300 TDI defender 110. Up to a few months ago I was getting 30 MPG ‘daily driving’. Sadly, the vehicle failed the MOT on emissions grounds. To cure the emissions problem I had to replace the turbo ( a vain had seized), recondition fuel injectors (they were 20-25% out), and recondition the fuel pump. At the same time I also had the engine carbon cleaned.

After all this work, the increase in power was phenomenal and the emissions were virtually zero but this came at a cost — I now get 25 MPG daily driving (and I consciously keep my foot off the accelerator pedal!).

I would like to get back to the 30 MPG I had (even if it means sacrificing some power).

All advice welcome as I know naff all about fuel systems. 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent

Not sure on this other than maybe the pump was tweaked before and is now std? But then it would feel less grunty after surely?

Anything else changed/been added? Tyres/air intake?

How does a vane seize on a 300? Assuming std turbo? Cheers

I think you were doing really well at 30mpg,, i monitered my fuel consumption years ago, best was 32mpg [ on motorway @55mph] ,, normal driving 27/-29 mpg. , the best figures i get ,is in the summer i remove the front prop , and lock the center diff, Then i get about 34mpg,

Hi. No nothing else changed at all. I saw the old turbo. the vane had seized half open and nothing would free it. No idea how that happened nor when! 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent

Yeh, it works fine, Cool free"s up more bhp too, and i"v been doing this for 5 years now, with no damage to transmission ,,

The wastegate you mean maybe? Vanes are fixed on a 300 turbo.

Are you driving it quicker/differently? Assuming wastegate in above you will now get more boost so more go as it actuates fip pin. Before you would of had less boost and used less fuel as fip pin wouldn't move down as much if wastegate was stuck part open. Cheers

I probably mean the wastegate but vane was the term used at the garage. I did drive quicker to start but am pacing myself now. Interesting point about more boost and fueling, thanks. Does FIP stand for fuel injector pin or...? thanks again James.

Just had a call from someone suggesting I check the fuel pump timing as this caused a similar problem in his 300tdi of the same age. 110 Defender 300tdi & Penman trailer with ally exped top and roof tent

Fuel pump timing could be advanced slightly which would give more power and probably use more fuel.

Does it smoke at all? on start up, over run? underload?

Does it start first turn? Cheers

When the work was done there were virtually no emissions, close to zero but mpg was 24 or under. the guy who fitted it all turned a nut on the fuel pump a quarter turn. this reduced fuel use and increased mpg to 26 but it does produce a little more smoke - bigger start up puff. The engine doesn't start quite as quickly as it used to.

does this mean much to you?
