Hello justinp
I really wanted my Defender to break and stay broke...as I felt at least then I could probably identify the problem. I chased this and spent money where it wasn't needed, but just decided to view this as part of the deal when living with a Defender...My wife has just perfected that sidways glance as I work on to fix the current issue... Not a straight forward job on a Puma and if you have fitted a X-Defend Steering Lock there is another (not insignificant) obstical in your way... https://foundry4x4.co.uk/index.php?route=p...duct_id=74 Ignition Switch Anyway for the money (peace of mind) it's worth swapping out i'd say to know that this part is not your problem and if it makes no difference then carry the original as a spare My fix is here... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic56773....p;start=45 Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Glad I found this thread, I have the exact same problem, some times it will run for days without an issue, others it will take 3 goes to start, then there are times it just wont start. Never been overly concerned and figured I would get to it until the other day, 10pm at night we got a bushfire alert to leave now, threw the dog and the kids in the car and it wouldn't start and it had been fine all week, fortunatley we just changed cars, but it made me realise it can't go on. I was about to get the starter motor stripped and buy a new battery, this is definitley worth doing first.
Thanks for coming back with the fix. Patrick |

Hello patclan
Good luck with your fix... a closing in bush fire adds a whole additional level of motivation to solve this I'm coming up to two years since swapping over the Lucus Ignition Switch and no re-occurrence of the problem so for a $60 AUD job (if DIY) and with apparently similar/identical characteristics i'd start with this. I ordered and carry a spare now...but really wouldn't want to fix this out in the 'field'. Interestingly (well for us anyway)... I was looking over a 2.4 110 Puma being expedition prepared at a local specialist it has been stripped almost right back and a serious amount of work was being undertaken... the electrical side of things included upgrading a lot of standard OEM bits...essentially 'Lucus out Bosch in' all of which had been specified with a high IP rating. Let us know our outcome... SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Well that was a pain to change, lucky I dont have hands the size of my dad or I would never have gotten that little screw out from the otherside of the barrel! And lucky I could untighten it with just a philips driver bit in my hand, no space for a screwdriver.
Anyway all the luck aside once again I am so glad I found this thread, the car wouldn't start, changed the ignition switch and it has started every attempt for the last 10 goes, I am hoping that it is permenant and I have a good feeling about it. So thank you so much for following up with the fix, I read so many posts on other forums that just ended with no solution, so thanks for sharing. Patrick |

This happens with one of my key fobs intermittently, but starts 100% of the time with the other fob. It mainly happened when I put fuel in and didn't lock it. Come back, jump in and the immobiliser kicks in, Had to shut the doors and lock it, unlock it and then it starts ok. I just dont use this fob anymore as the other one doesn't do this. Maybe try another fob, or get it re-programmed. |

Nice to hear the ignition on these is culprit for most start/ignition issues, and also the IPC/CLUSTER is notorious for Immobilizer issues as well
