My everyday runaround car is a Honda Jazz. I know, nothing special, a bit boring ,but very reliable and great for local stuff.
My insurance renewal arrived from the Post Office informing me that my new fully comp. premium is £235.99 up from last years £198.51. I did the usual comparison site trawl and found quotes with a similar £50 excess, with No claims protection for around £175. That's for me I thought , but first I will go on my existing Post Office website as a new customer and see what they quote. Well, interestingly I got a quote for £119.24 which is about half my renewal from the same company. I rang them up and was told that these introductory prices were only available to new customers and they could not price match. Guess what ?, I could become a new customer if I did not renew my existing policy and became "new" on line. Which is exactly what I have done. Has the insurance world gone completely crazy ? or are we being taken for the idiots that they think we are? Are you finding the same ?? 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue 1967 Morris Traveller 1966 Morris Convertible 2012 VW T5 Camper Quod Abundat Non Obstat. |

I agree with your sentiments entirely, Discomog - except all of the insurance companies are doing exactly the same thing.
It makes you wonder how cheap insurance could be if these companies spent less time and money trying to entice new business and just gave a percentage saving to the loyal customer. Goes to prove, Swine&Small, you need to be a bite cute when it's time for renewal. |

Its not just insurance companies - there's a post on here about the AA, who I am about to call and tell them I'm not going to pay any more than a new customer would.
I have also just been through the exact same scenario with BT - closed my account and took out a new one online to get the same deal offered to new customers as they could not offer it over the phone - also got a £60 pre paid card too! There must be some sales/KPI metric that all these companies are on that gives them targets for new business and to hell with loyal customers but I am damned if I can see the logic - I understand the principle of getting more business by offering a deal but where is the benefit if your existing customers walk because you are clearly shafting them?! |

It seems that new business is not taken on a net basis but on actual new sign ups, ignoring the leavers. Maybe the executives get their bonuses on that basis. That would explain why we are encouraged to re-apply rather than just renew.
Funny old world . I am so glad I retired in '96. I feel quite sorry for the younger people but maybe it has always been like that 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue 1967 Morris Traveller 1966 Morris Convertible 2012 VW T5 Camper Quod Abundat Non Obstat. |

As insurance is compulsory, surely it should be offered by the government and only cover costs - not make a profit? 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I'm astonished at your astonishment... It's a yearly ring-round to renew car insurance(s), house insurance, internet provider, ant-virus programme etc. Yes, a waste of a couple of days of one's life but, otherwise, each of them will rack up the price for your "loyalty". And, worse, the small print will have allowed them to take this inflated increased cost directly off your bank account! They rely on those poor souls who can't be bothered to make comparisons and query the increase, thinking "I've been a customer for years, they'll look after me". Peter |

It's the same thing with house insurance. This years quote was £165, up from £127 last year. Rang them up and told them that I've had a cheaper quote. They asked who with and how much. A couple of taps on their keyboard and it's down to £117. Not a bad saving for a few minutes on the phone

My House insurance is around £600, been with the NFU for years, check out others and brokers every year and no other ones come close. So it does not always have to be the case. 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue

The only legal requirement is for 3rd party. I do agree though that 3rd party only insurance should be part of the RFL, therefore if it’s taxed, it has the minimum legally required insurance. That would still leave a market for comprehensive cover, fire & theft, personal injury, hire cars, etc Defender 90 200tdi |

Another reason for the reprobates not to tax their cars.
Put it all on the price of fuel + the more miles you do or fuel you use the more you pay !! 1983 Series 3 Pick up in Marine Blue 1967 Morris Traveller 1966 Morris Convertible 2012 VW T5 Camper Quod Abundat Non Obstat. |

I think there is enough tax on fuel as it is
France I believe has road tax included in the price of fuel and their fuel cost is comparable to ours. I agree, the more you use, the more you pay. Agree - i wouldnt add RFL to fuel...not in the UK...it might seem sensible now (although i dont think it is) but long term it will cost us
Insurance is a joke...seems like they all want you to ring up now or you cant get a quote as an existing customer etc. But then the call centre shuts at 1700, you then spend ages giving the same information to get crazy prices and keep you on the phone for hours. I swear it used to be easier. Mike |
