Engine oil leak.
S.O.S please Help. My 2010 defender 90 2.4 with only 45000miles has developed a engine oil leek. After replacing the brake vacuum pump it still persisted to leak oil mainly from the inlet manifold area, all down the side of the engine and onto the cross member. After many clean downs and head scratching trying to trace the leak, I decided to take it to Gray hill landrover glos, specialists to let them get it sorted. The first thing they did was put a oil pressure gauge on to check the pressure, it showed 60lbs of pressure on tick over, they went on to replace the oil pump and the oil filter housing, they rang today to say that it made no difference to the pressure, so only solution is new engine. This is such bad news on such a low mileage engine, me and my wife bought our Landy brand new when we were at a bad time of our lives dealing with my wives cancer,this little Defender was a real pick me up for us both, we have forgiven it so many times with clutch problems 3off, and gear box problems, etc, etc. Now this. Has anyone had or heard of this problem, if so, what was the out come. We still love this car and would like to get it sorted.

60lbs on tickover is not good, a 2.4 should be around 15.... Shocked

Did they just concentrate on the oil pump, and nothing else?
It would be interesting to measure the flow rate into the turbo, it sounds like there could be a blockage somewhere?
But without a full stripdown and clean that could be tricky to find.
How often has the oil been changed?

What’s it like with the oil cap removed?
A long shot, it might be worth checking injector seals, as they can cause excessive crankcase pressure.

I’ve not encountered a TDCI with high pressure, so it would be interesting to hear the outcome.

Thanks Ian for the reply, I have had the Landy serviced every year with the MOT, they used a detergent flush for the oil change, and Morris oil. I cant help thinking it could be my fault, as I am very fortunate to live very close to where I work, so my usual routine is in the morning i travel 1.5 miles to my small holding to do the feeding the animals, thats 45minutes, then on to work for the day which is another 1.5 miles max, then the same coming home, so I assumed I had clogged it up. I will talk to Grey hill Landrover tomorrow and ask what checks they did, it seems at the moment they just changed the oil pump and oil filter housing, both of which have a oil relieve valve, they also unblocked the oil pick up pipe. I will let you know the out come, but it seems at this moment in time that its going to be a long time to sort this one.

Just paid a £800 bill, and drove the Landy home in tick over, still no change, the garage still wanted to fit a new engine. Back to square one. anyone got any thoughts? please. Big Cry

? Are you sure?

Few months ago I installed an oil pressure gauge in my 2.4L puma from 2010. I see about 4.5bar when idling cold (<0°C) going up to about 5,9bar when driving. The warm engine idles at 1.6bar going up to ~4.5bar at 2500rpm.

I don't know in the moment if my gauge measures relative to sealevel pressure or absolutely (against vacuum, +1bar).

If yes (relative pressure), the oil pressure is between 65lbs and 85lbs (cold) respectively 23lbs and 65lbs (warm).
If no (absolute pressure), pressure's between 50lbs and 71lbs (cold) respectively 9lbs and 51lbs.

I assume my gauge shows the absolute oil pressure. My engine has 105,000km, runs perfectly, had new copper injector seals at 100,000, and absolutely no oil leaks whatsoever.

Ah thank you Tardis for your reply, Someone at work did ask me if the oil pressure was measured on a cold engine, I would say yes it was, as they said at the garage that they didnt want to run it too long in case of damage. Now that I have the Landy home I will put new copper injector seals on like you have done, and hope it will all settle back down. Thanks again. Thumbs Up
