Insurance Saga & Thank You A-Plan | |
Thought I'd share my insurance saga with you all...
Had an 'incident' with a car in a lane 2 years ago, no damage to either vehicle (although the guy seemed to think there was at the time). To be on the safe side I rang my insurer (Adrian Flux) and spent 2 hours on their claims line going through everything. I was assured I'd done the right thing by letting them know and that it was listed as a 'Notifiation Only'.
Over the next few weeks I kept getting calls from Flux's claims people to see if any of us had developed any injuries and if we wanted to make a PI claim - they finally got the message that we were not injured in a <10mph pass in a lane. This annoyed me slightly.
So time came for renewal came and I had the shock of my life - premium doubled . I was also shocked to find I had an 'at fault' claim on my renewal worth £2k. Fuming, I rang Flux to ask why they didn't tell me the guy had claimed only to be told that he hadn't. This was when I learnt that in the insurance industry you are GUILTY until proven INNOCENT and that despite no claim ever being made I was guilty until a 9 month period elapsed.
Flux were quite abrupt about all of this and when I asked why I wasn't told all of this at the time I rang the claims line, they just said something like "That's the way it is". They also told me that if I hadn't have told them and the guy had claimed against me, I'd have had to pay £2k in excess for not telling them
In fairness they did promise that after the 9 month period expired and no claim was made, they would refund me the 'extra' premium applied but that they couldn't tell me what it was. So they had me between the legs - quotes from other insurers were stupid and I'd not get a refund from them so I was forced to stay with Flux.
Time came for refund and despite my premium doubling I got back just over £200 - oh but hang on both the underwriter and Flux need to take their admin fees off so actually you only get £130 - so much for a refund
A few weeks ago my renewal came through from Flux and it was more, YES MORE, than last year even though my claim has now been wiped off my file - except it hasn't because I have to declare that I DIDN'T have an accident for the next 5 years subsequent phonecalls with Flux and they drop my premium to just above £900 with breakdown and flex drive... so why not just do that in the first place Mr Flux!!!
Being less than impressed with Flux recently I started looking around. Went to lots of companies but as soon as you start talking modifications they just aren't interested. Tried some specialist insurers all came in at over £1k.
I then found A-Plan though this forum, had a really good conversation with one of the guys in the Thatcham office (as advised here) and in less than an hour had my cover arranged. It came in at just over £600 + breakdown which is £80 odd, more than Flux but the cover is good and still cheaper than AA/RAC). I have all my mods declared, business use, the mileage I need etc. etc. and even have greenlane/offroad cover!
When the paperwork through I spotted a few mistakes (not their fault, like my name which I should have spelled out for them) and rang the office back. Through to a lady this time to dealt with me straight away (no passing from office to office with Flux) and sorted all the niggles I had. New documents arrived minutes later, I sent my proof of NCD back and we're sorted. I even asked them an unusual question abour 'run lock' systems and although the lady didn't know she e-mailed me back as requsted within minutes after speaking to Markerstudy the underwriter.
It's simply the best experience I have had with an insurance product in many many years.
I have the confidence that I can speak to them about anything when needed and, although I doubt their rules are any different to the rest of the industry, should the worst happen I at least expect I'll get the personal touch rather than Flux's frosty reception.
Obviously I hope that A-Plan will be just as competitive when it comes to renewal, but I'll let you know next year! Thanks A-Plan Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

mk1collector as the broker for the insurance we deal with the insurer so who you are insured with doesn't change who you speak to as you still come through to the great team here at Thatcham with our claims team on hand to look after you
*touch wood you don't need it!*
Markerstudy are one of the insurers that specialist brokers use because of the cover they offer - especially for 4x4 owners for things like the Off Road/Green Lane cover.
Have a great day!
