110 not starting and alarm goes off when key is turned. So it seems that this is simply due to a flat battery.
To charge it the book says that the battery must be removed. Is this correct or can a charger simply be connected to the battery terminals without disconnecting everything? I now realise that I will need a trickle charger if the vehicle is left for a few weeks. What works best and where to get one? |

Morning Chap,
I use an Optimate charger, that I used to use on my motorcycle. Simple connections and water proof if the Rover is left outside. I connected the battery connectors up and they hang out, just under the front of the battery box covers, but under the seat base. Plug in and forget. Cheers, Simon |

Most of us will use a Ctek charger. Do a search for Ctek on here and you will get three full pages of thread results. Below are a few of those threads which also highlights Martin’s adapters for easy connection. Never read a bad word about Ctek chargers.

I only disconnected the flat battery when I used the reconditioning mode of the CTEK as this produces higher voltages than normal. Otherwise no need to disconnect. I have CTEK plugs connected to the batteries.

+1... Made an "unbilical" with a battery health indictor, and I can plug the charger into here without removing the passenger seat Click image to enlarge Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

the Ring branded smart chargers they sell in Halfords are good, they'll do trickle charging, as well as boost charging, battery reconditioning and testing etc. You can also use them with the battery connected.
The only reason the handbook says to disconnect the battery is that old style 'dumb' chargers would damage some of the vehicle electronics and alternator diodes if hooked up directly to the car. Land Rover don't know what sort of charger you're going to use, it could be a nice smart charger or it could be a rusty old thing you've had in the garage for the past 30 years. So they say disconnect to be on the safe side. |

I've got a little Maypole auto charger which was very cheap and has been going for years. Has two settings, fast charge which elevates battery voltage to 14.4V and keeps it there (alternator voltage) and a "trickle" setting which holds the battery about about 12.8V and can be left on indefinitely.
Really like the idea above of connecting for maintenance charging via the towing socket, I will look into that --- 2006 Defender 110 SW 300Tdi • 2011 Ford Ranger XLT crewcab • 2015 Defender 110 Station Wagon Utility TDCi |

Ctek are very good and this socket will fit a Td5 dash if you don’t have electric windows.

CTEK for me too via a permanently connected 12v socket in the rear of my 110 using the Comfort Indicator Cigarette Plug.
I run a 240v extension into the back of the 110 and I can still shut the door so it’s all contained inside, weatherproof and thief proof. |

Well I bought the Ctek MXS 5.0 and started charging it today.
I also bought the comfort indicator panel like Baz8046. I have electric windows so intend to fit the panel into the cubby box since its near the battery anyway. Anyone else done this? I dont have the correct tow electrics to charge from it. |
