Portugal 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 HT Keswick Green
So, finally I was able to change the belt and make a highway test.
While driving 120-130km/h the temperatures stayed in the 88-100°C range. The 100°C was reached only sometimes and it was dropping.
The only problem is that now the ambient temperatures are between +10°C and +25°C so it's difficult to compare. Bergos

Can anyone tell me what are the normal temperature ranges for a healthy Defender Puma 2.4 depending on the ambient temperatures?
How much does the ambient temperature influence a hot engine while driving on a highway? Bergos

When I’m on a good motorway run, sitting between 75/80mph
My Ultragauge is constantly reading between 85, 90 degrees.

It never goes over 90 deg. 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered.

Mine goes higher than that, it fluctuates between 88°C and 98°C, most of the time sitting around 93°C.

Considering that the standard thermostat starts opening at 88°C, I reckon this range of temperature is to be expected, unless you change the thermostat for one that opens earlier (like PEL500110) maybe? “A Land Rover immobilized is a moral defeat for the driver and bad publicity for the vehicle, […] it's up to you to do justice to your Land Rover!” - Land Rover Driving Technique.

Ok. So now, during the Portuguese winter mine is between 88-100 while driving 130 km/h.
If I drive 100 it's definitely lower.
For now I will assume that the problem is fixed and I will see what will happen in summer.

Mine does goes above 100 degrees when climbing for a long time .
When i drove to Portugal for xmas the ultragauge was always reading between 80 and 93 but in Spain we had to climb some long hills and the temperature got to 103.
This when the outside temperatures were 5 or 6 degrees.
It will be interesting to see what sort of temperatures the ultragauge shows when i go camping to Italy this summer.

OK, guys!
Seems that after 4 years of struggling, stressing and following crazy theories, the problem has been solved! Finally. Well those theories seem crazy now, in hindsight...

Anyway, to make the long story short, I replaced the radiator 2 days ago (and the water pump, but it seemed to be completely fine). Since then the temperature went to 95 degrees maybe once on a long uphill highway while driving in the 6th gear. I did this on purpose to stress the engine and see how high the temp will go. Besides this the temperatures keep in the 78-88 degree range!

So, yes, seems that the radiator was clogged...

Also - normal temperatures should not exceed 95 deg. even under load.

Also - the fuel economy is back to normal!!! Bergos

Sad epilogue...
Unfortunately, this story has a follow up.
Sunday I went on a trip from Lisbon to Warsaw.
Temperatures up to 40°C.
Sunday - all good.
Monday - the car overhead on a highway and I also noticed a strange noise at higher revs. Engine stopped when I pulled over. I needed to wait for the engine temperature to drop before I could start it again. I topped the engine oil.
Tuesday - in the afternoon the engine started to cut off, power loss, difficulty starting. Finally it died on a country road. Has not started again.
Turbo shaft very loose. Oil disappeared through the turbo.
I am afraid that my engine is a piece of junk now.

Sometime ago our 2008 2.4 was cutting out and the temperature gauge would rise. Turned out to be a loose hose clip on one of the cooling system hoses, Water/coolant was escaping and the vehicle has an in built safety mechanism to shut off if the temperature goes above a certain level. It will restart when the temperature drops to normal. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
