This is going to be your best bet - http://www.ministryofdefender.co.uk/land-rover-interior.html
There are a few issues with the Puma dash in the earlier trucks. The main issue being clearance with the shifter and the lower dash. The other being loosing the flappy vent controls. Puma dials are unlikely to be worth it for the amount of work and there are few easy options to spruce up the factory set. Alternatively you could use aftermarket GPS dials which would simplify things. I briefly explored this route before going with a 2002+ TD5 setup. Even then there are still a few wires I've yet to hook up. |

I've never seen a retrofit that didn't look like a complete dogs dinner above the gear shifter.
When I was looking to buy a Defender, I considered an earlier car and retrofitting the nicer puma dash, but there isn't really a way to do it that looks like a factory job. They all look like what it is, a later dash butchered to fit an earlier car. |

I’m fitting an Auto box, so levers are not an issue. I have a centre console in mind too which looks great. My post is asking about the wiring as it’s obviously very different to the 300tdi wiring

I believe the biggest problem here is that the signals to the electronic Puma dash, (in common with most other modern(ish) cars) is that they are carried over a CanBus digital data link rather than the old-style analogue signals and dials. I've heard you can get an adaptor to connect analogue signals to a CanBus device but I understand it's no simple task. |

I do not know if you have bought the Puma dash yet but I find it a chew if you get a fault and need to get in the back.
I am not sure if an earlier dash would be better. |

I've just come out the other side of this conversion from a 1985 dash to a Puma bulkhead and full dash. I hasten to mention that this work has been done by LAS Landrovers in Bangor N Wales after I bought a puma bulkhead to replace mine that was rotten in all the usual places.
I looked at the Ministry conversion and even obtained a binnacle from them (which wasn't used) but LAS thought there was the option to use the stock dash with a bit of learning wiring diagrams. It took some time but I'm so glad I let them go down this route as it looks stock. Well as stock as a 85 V8 90 can with a auto gearbox and TDCi bulkhead.... I've got the stock Puma instruments all working, with the exception of the temp gauge. I've a MUD pod on the top of the dash with my aftermarket water temp gauge in plus a few others so I have a working temp gauge. The warning lights are all Puma ones and work as my old ones did. Obviously anything mine doesn't have like traction control, ABS etc isn't connected to anything and won't ever light up. The speedo was straight forward but for the rev counter and fuel gauge they used the working from my old gauge behind the Puma dash to keep the standard look. Its really early days, I only picked it up last week but l love the change to the new layout. I've got some more work to do, things like I've got no interior light working at the moment as the old switch has gone from down by the door catch but the light isn't currently wired to the door switches but happy to share any info if required. I've edited this post to include a few photos from while the work was underway and complete. I don't have any of the dash working but can sort out if required next time I'm in it in daylight. I've seen pics of someone using disco one dials and making there own surround to fit into the puma binnacle if that makes sense. Looked really well.
