Trip to northern Spain
Am planning 10 days in June heading to northern Spain crossing to Santander from Plymouth. Interested in any routes and sites as plan to head south and west through national parks then go to surf beaches on norther coast. Be nice to do some forest trails. May get into northern Portugal.

All suggestions and experiences welcome

I can recommend driving along the N-621 to Potes through La Hermida gourge and then on to Cosgaya (bottom left of the fist map). We stayed at the Hotel del Osso 20 years ago, just one week after week after I bought my Discovery 1 V8 auto. It was our first trip off road!

On the way to Fuente De, great cable car trip to the top of the mountain, you can pick up a trail in the village of Espinama...

bottom left on this Google map, you can drive over the top of the mountain to Sotres at the top left. It feels like you are on top of the world! You can see the trail on google maps clearly marked.

Fantastic Don. I will get a map out over the weekend and start highlighting these routes. Any suggestions on camp sites or if aware whether you can wild camp?

We stayed in small hotels on our trip however I think there is a camp sites at Llanes and also near the beach at Pechon as marked on the map below.

We stayed at both places, very relaxed and laid back.

It was in the days before online mapping and tablets! However my old Nokia mobile had a full signal across the whole of the mountains so you will probably find MrGoogle works up there!!!

I bought some maps of the area from Stanfords (the big map shop in London), and the copied some routes from a friend who rode his off road bike over there. I have to go up into my loft tomorrow and will try and dig them out and let you know their reference numbers. Cheers Don.

Hello Davidej

My wife and I spent a month cycling around the Picos-de-Europa Nation Park,
if ever there was an area to fundamentally change your perception of a country,
then this is it, absolutely fantastic...

Best suited to roaming around in your Defender, parking up and then walking,
if you're in to that... then this place will not disappoint.

Good Luck SKIP

This is the map I used. I bought it from Stanfords in London, produced by Karlan. Shows most of the drive-able trails.
