TDCI 2.4 Alternator and Dual Battery Setup
Hi All,

Looking to set up a leisure battery for my Puma 2.4. Trying to determine if the Puma's alternator is a computer controlled one. In which case I will need a battery to battery charging unit or else I am intending to use a voltage sensing relay (VSR).
Is it computer controlled or not?
Any suggestions on this are highly appreciated.
Thank you.

Smart alternators are essentially those that have their output voltage controlled externally via the Engine Control Unit (ECU) rather than by an internal voltage regulator as found on traditional alternators.

Defenders have always been fitted with traditional alternators, which maintain their voltage between 13.8-14.4V depending on battery condition, load etc. and vary their output to match the number of amps being drawn.

You'll be fine with a standard setup matched to your needs.

I bet the new Defender will have a smart alternator though to comply with emissions which means we'd all need to buy expensive battery to battery chargers for dual battery set ups and then you can't use gel batteries either as they get damaged by these alternators apparently! Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon
