Cheap AT Tyre Recommendations
Hi

New to Defenders , picked up a 200tdi 1989 model today. Got a bit of TLC to do, but need to change the tyres. Looking for a cheap AT tyre (some road, green lane and pay & play sites) covering about 3-5k miles per year (if that - its not a daily drive).

I've seen some Hifly with an AT tread, but very little reviews available for them. I've also seen some Kingpin (but perhaps a bit to aggressive and therefore loose out on wet roads)

Any recommendations for cheap (well south of £100 per corner) AT tyres? Looking for 235-70-16

(and yes, I appreciate you get what you pay for, four small patches of rubber in contact with the ground etc. - I could go AT2 or AT3 route).

Have you considered Insa Turbos?

The Special tracks are extreme but others are pretty much AT tyres. 1970 Series 2A 88"

Yes, was looking, its difficult to tell from the pictures which ones would be appropriate (some seem to have a very aggressive tread patter) but I have seen the Ranger and Dakkar.

I think I prefer the Ranger.

I've heard of Insa as well, as opposed to Torque, Hifly and a range of others who on face value are cheap and look OK, but always make me wonder...

As you have a defender you might as well go up to 235/85R16 tyre size, you are at a disadvantage thinking of running the smaller 235/70R16.

If you are not using it daily then consider the trade off and go for a MT style pattern for less road manners you gain in the off-road ability when you do venture off tarmac.
The extreme style pattern is an option but road manners will suffer to the large part.

Insa Turbo Rangers are pretty good; I had a set on a 110 some years ago. They are the same pattern as the original BFG AT. Darren

Thanks, I will look at the slightly higher profile as well, it’s interesting it push the prices up by20%, but I guess you’re paying for more rubber! It does mean I’d need to get 5 as opposed to 4 tyres as well though as the spare would need to match!

(The spare looks in good condition and is an AT style stream pattern from an unknown manufacturer, but it’s 235,70,16)

Difference might also be in the sidewall. I'm happy with my AT's, only reason that would make me go MT is the fact that (in this case) they have a triple layer sidewall instead of double so they can take some more punishment.

Greetings and enjoy your new defender! During the first years of ownership I was always short for cash to sort things out, but it's my biggest joy.

I had twice some Insa AT tyres - remanufactured. I'll not do this again, as I had a big problem with them - sidewall cracking, leading to replacement of tires with more than enough rubber. The life time of these tires were too short. On the other hand I have some Truck 2000 style remanufactured tires with extra strong sidewall, and these are good, but very heavy. So for me - heavy remanufactured MT OK with heavy duty sidewalls, remanufactured AT - never again.
The sidewall cracking on the inside wall of tire is not easy to check - you need to go under the car.
BFG AT were usable for more than 10 years. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

These Toys Open Country MT's are a lot of a bargain & Protyre usually have a promo code £15 off two etc. Ive used these tyres & in the states they're a high price quality tyre, they're also very civilised on the road for a MT, similar in ride & feel to Goodyear Wrangler MTR's

Booked in next Wednesday to get insa turbo rangers put on. The MT tyre was more expensive, so I’ve not gone that route this year, but am going for the 235/85/16 tyre
