Hi all,
Well a wet Sat eve in the New Forest and for the first time my trusty 05 75k mile 90 that has taken me to Switzerland and back - turns on the engine light and decides that I can go no faster than a hedgehog with a broken leg. At the time I had just bumped thro puddles on an unmade road - gently. I need to know what to do first. I have no experience with this sort of problem This post looks helpful http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic37666.html But also: Seriously - is 3mph normal? I tried turning off, waiting restarting to no avail. After 90 mins and 2 miles or so I had reached a pub and stopped for a refresher and then - it fired normally. And a tad disappointed that two defenders passed as I crawled with hazard lights on and... passed me. In the Rising Sun an excellent chap with ex army 300tdi - many thanks to him. And - if it happened once I assume it will now keep happening till I fix it (or get a tdi)..? So I really really want this to go away Thanks all Sold the much modified 110 2.8, in Oz Brought the 90 home from Switzerland ... |

Mine get's wet sometimes but never had that problem yet.

Change the crank sensor for a genuine unit.

Sounds like it might not be getting a throttle pedal signal, so just sitting at idle?

Thanks for the replies, in between hail showers had a wee peek and it's not oil in the electrics, so the two suspects of crank sensor and throttle pedal signal... 'not getting a throttle pedal signal'... maybe. 3mph that was the crazy part. If you are 500km from anywhere in Strzelecki desert it'd be a thirsty week. Idle indeed.

If the engine light is on and there is no reaction on the throttle pedal. That might be the first thing to look at. If you switch it off and disconeect and connect again the black plug on the ecu. It might work again. Roel

Took opinions ... crank sensor failure should stop the car (?) until the sensor decides to sense again. Diagnostic code / display of 'driver demand failure' and that the car went into tickover mode only .. suggest more to throttle pedal.
So this has been changed and now we wait and see. Being a sealed unit no way to physically know. Ben in Sway reckons that my muscle memory is the problem ... each driver drives at exactly the same throttle position just from habit and will wear the sensor. Flamin' electronics. In the nanocom you can look at (from memory) engine inputs fuelling, then one of the pages shows the voltage on the throttle pedal tracks. It has either 2 or three tracks. Mine is the 2 track so:
1 voltage is always 5V (reference) 1 voltage is 0v when pedal up and 5v when pedal down 1 voltage is 5v when pedal up and 0v when pedal down. The two variable voltages should always add up to 5v, if they don't then the ECU assumes pedal fault. I believe the three track uses a similar system with voting, ie voltages should add up to 5V or be equal. |

yes the 3 way ones has 1 track from 0 to 5 V and 2 tracks from 5 to 0 V. Roel
