Looks very retro with wooden poles. It'll be heavy wet, take an age to dry and take up loads of load space and seems expensive to me. But these may not be a problem for you. James

Correction, a rustic RV2.
Now some of you might accuse me of being biased as we sell Oztents  So the fabric that tent is made of is FIRE PROOF? Really? I would be interested to see that claim actually tested by say the Fire Research Station. Now an open fire under an awning is not the best idea if there is any sparks from the fire or if someone just stokes the fire too enthusiastically. Apart from no mosquito netting no form of ventilation in the sleeping area to combat condensation. Price £740 with no VAT RV2 £765 including 20% VAT My advice? Buy a Oztent RV2 and keep open fires a reasonable distance away from the tent. Brendan |

I agree with all the comments here as we looked at one at the overland show a couple of years ago. Whilst well made I didn't think it was suitable for Scottish conditions. Weight and packing size really put us off.

Well Scot I would rather be cautious with my comments then gung ho with them
Now just a quick look at your link shows that the fabric is fire retardant rather then FIRE PROOF which was claimed on the Land Rover Camp Fire tent. Also your fire shelter is slightly higher and a bigger distance horizontally to tent fabric. Also less chance of getting smoke into any sleeping areas with your shelter compared to Camp Fire tent. Now chances are there are some 'reasonably sensible' people around on your scout camps rather then the errr beer sozzled LR gathering crowd throwing even more firewood onto the fire. Just my opinion rather then hard facts. By the way in our Coleman shelter there are a few repair patches from sparks from open fires outside the shelter. Admittedly a lighter and different material. Never really a tent man but like the Series 1, 2a look of it ,Leeds I am your man for a fire lit a couple of good one's and even had fire men with blue light's and all for one ,long story but you should never have a fire near anything that burns or could burn when it gets hot enough so the man in uniform told me

To be accurate their claims are "fire proofed" and "flame proof" "Materials * Tent: 12oz poly/cotton canvas, water, rot and fire proofed. Choice of colours. PVC flame proof base for the sleeping compartment." In any event, fire retardant is also a rather meaningless term without reference to the performance standard for testing it. |

The fact they've quoted any sort of BS standard is probably better than most Scout units that use a canvas fire shelter.
We used to have an ex-army (possibly US) ridge tent, that was fashioned into an open sided shelter with some additional uprights along on side. Never caught fire, but that might have been prevented by the layers of soot and other substances ingrained into the fabric. Minging was an understatement, but oddly no one considered it dangerous at the time. Now, personally I wouldn't leave my Scouts with such a shelter. Back to the original question whilst I like the concept, and if we ignore the cost for a second, the packed size doesn't seem that convenient (poles are 1.3m long?), and I would have thought it'll be a bit draughty sleeping in there so your going to want bivi bags or camp cots (maybe even both) to make it a little more comfortable. 2007 - Stornoway Grey 90 XS SW - Gone 2002 - Black Discovery II - Gone 2014 - Montalcino Red 110 XS SW |

Regardless of other shortcomings (real or perceived) the packed size is a lot better than an equivalent Oztent. You stand a much better chance of getting it into a vehicle. Darren
