Gearbox Rattle
Hi all

I had my clutch replaced about 5 months ago to eliminate a rattle at low revs especially in low range.
At a recent day offroading I noticed that rattle is either back or still there. More so when the gearbox oil is nice and warm.
Has anyone els actually had that chatter dissapear completely when the revised clutch was fitted?
It makes the most noise when taking off in 2n'nd low up a gradient.
I have booked her in on Monday for them to look at it and the items below
Just for Interest: Clutch Fluid Level dropping
Oil leak at drain on bellhousing
Rattle in Gearbox
Rear door water leak
Handbreak drum suspected oval and rubs constantly
Let's hope I get her back still this year Neutral Puma 110 - gone

Mine was replaced 5k miles ago and is still ok however you might like me have had your clutch replaced with one the same and not the new modified one which came out I think end of august 2008. This being the case it may need replacement again.

You could be right but when I had mine done I had to wait two weeks too as well but it was the earlyer type that was fitted. If your was the post August 08 and it is going already then this is a bit of a worry!

Hi Cape Landy

My 90 tdci has been in and out with this exact same problem. Its now at Waterford. They have fitted a brand new transfer box and now i am awaiting the new clutch assembly, thrust bearing. I hope it solves the problem. The parts will take four weeks to arrive. As soon as they do il let you know if all is well. In the mean time ill just have to keep thrashing the D3 Land Rover SA have given me. Land Rover's don't leak oil, they simply mark their territory!

Hi Shorty
Hi Shorty

how loud was your 90's gearbox noise?
Mine is just a strange rattle sound - I was thinking of removing the center tunnel so one can hear it better when taking it to LR to hear.
They did admit the first time I took it that the noise was not normal.
I am planning a trip to Botswana in late June so I had better make sure they fix it by then. Did your dealer do a lot of side stepping before admitting the t-case had to be changed?

Mine also has a slight intemittent rattling type of sound that seems to come from some where around the transmision tunnel, I have accepted that it has something to do with a system in the engine bay, ABS, antistall, injectors or a pump of sorts because it happens when the engine is under load, like you say, pulling away on a slight incline in second, I hear mine a lot when manuvering a heavy trailer at low speed or when driving slowly on the farm where there are rocks and holes that slow my progress also when idling in 1st gear in traffic.

It is espcially obvious when driving slowly in thick sand.

I did have the clutch rattle but that was different and easy to diagnose, the clutch would rattle at idle while standing still at times and when the vehicle was switched off it would turn of with very noisy rattle that could be heard from quite some distance away from outside the vehicle , they raplaced the clutch and that rattle is gone.

I don't know if it is the same rattle, just a thought, maybe nothing to worry about?

the sound of the rattle is very faint almost like a high pitch jingle. you can hear it quite consistently when you hit the highway and take it to about 100 - 120 km/h and then ease off the accelerator. The clutch jingles all the time. The guys at Waterford showed me the dissembled clutch with disintegrated springs which now makes a lot of sense. but the faint jingle is defiantly the transfer box which thankfully has been replaced. Just waiting for clutch assembly to arrive and be fitted before i can test it. I was initially pushed from pillar to post but one phone call to Land Rover SA and all was sorted. i bought the vehicle in April 2008 since then ive done 20 000km and the car has been to the dealership on a monthly basis with issues since new. getting quite fed up now. Land Rover's don't leak oil, they simply mark their territory!

looks like this post is becoming a Souf Africun complaint department Wink
My sound is more like Fontuin's description and not a problem at high speeds.
My clutch being already sorted means it must be gearbox or t-case related.
Wait and see what LR have to say.
I also noted last night that my one break pipe is nearly worn right through on the heat shield Shocked

My clutch was a nightmare. Bit like a Pitt Bull when you did a gear change or pulled off. Could not pull off smoothely and gears grated a bit during gear change. It made a terrible noise at low rpm. It was replaced 10 000 ks ago and now the vehicle drives like a dream. It seems like some of you guys have not had the same pleasing results that I have had. I say that we should bring back the DEATH PENALTY for LR mechanics that cannot service our vehicles properly.

Had all the changes made to my 07 clutch: Fews even put in the new sump without asking. Still getting the old rattles and vibration after 50 k or so. Really frustrating 'cos just 1 finger on the gearstick stops both...not always a good idea to drive one handed though. Embarassed
