Hi,
I need to change my indicator stalk and to do so I need to remove the steering wheel. Sounds straight forward, got the cover off and undone the nut but the wheel itself will not budge. Tried rocking it at 3o clock and 9o clock, hitting it with a mallet and just generally a lot of yanking and there is absolutely no movement. Click image to enlarge I don't have a wheel puller and ideally need to do it this weekend so if anyone has any special tips to getting this thing off I'd really appreciate your help Matt. Hi Matt,
Different steering wheel to mine as mine just pulls off. If the two holes that are visible are threaded it looks as if it needs a puller! Are you not able to make a puller using a couple of threaded bolts and a bit of flat bar drilled? Paul Paul 1996 Defender 90 300tdi |

They are threaded, so I'll have a look at what I've got lying around. Cheers Matt.

Obviously, you have undone the nut: Seriously though try and push and pull rocking movement at quarter to three with both hands if that does not work you will have to go back to hitting with a mallet on both sides, you can use quite a bit of force with a mallet without damaging the shaft. Just hope some previous owner has not use Loctite or similar on the wheel.
Tip leave the nut to lose on the shaft as if it does come free by pulling it is possible the wheel will come off and hit you in the face leaving the nut to lose on the shaft will prevent that. Flat bar or better still a bit of angle so it doesn't bend; drill a couple of holes at the same centres as the holes in the wheel then insert bolts through the holes & into the wheel so the bar bridges the column. With the nut on the column loosened off but in place to protect the threads, take up the slack in the bolts then tighten each a little at a time & the wheel should pop off. If it doesn't then get both bolts nice & tight & hit the bar with a hammer to shock it.

As above, a short piece of flat bar drilled to match the two threaded holes in the boss, wind the bolts in and the threaded bar will press against the top of the column (nut removed of course) and gently pull the wheel off.
Foolproof and simple. ONE LIFE, GET IT! |

Managed in the end with a bit of help from my dad yanking on one side and a good few clouts on the other side of the diameter.
