Hi folks,
So - because a) of horrific images of Land Rovers burning at the side of the road b) the fact that I'm planning a 'dash out' event and c) because the wiring on my car's been kicking about for 24 years.... I'm thinking about maybe getting a new main wiring harness. Looked at autosparks (it is pretty pricey, but that's not any specific comment against that company. Staff were very helpful) and my chassis number isn't listed. Whatever system they have says that my car is a 200Tdi. Definitely not - it's a 300. And that it's a 1996 model - nope. I haven't got the V5 to hand right now, but it's an L plate car. Perhaps it was a pre-reg, if they did that back then? Before I go any further, are there any 'security' issues from posting bits of a chassis number? What's safe to post - or not? I can't think why not, but in this day and age..... Autosparks are advising to order a loom which goes with the chassis no. - which is for a 200Tdi - and that just the engine loom would be different. ... So I'm at a bit of a loss. Were the 200 and 300Tdi Defenders so similar in their 'body' wiring and accessories that the looms would be identical...? Muchos gracias as usual! Early 300's where on L regs.
I wouldn't have any issue posting my VIN (or reg!) - its visible to anyone looking at your car VIA the plate behind the screen, or to anyone that see your car from the reg number on it. Obviously your choice but in my opinion nothing to worry about. However, why do you want to post it? I dont think you will gain anything posting it on here |

...and just to add grist to the mill. I did a google and the manuals on retroanaconda's site came up.
They show - 300Tdi, for chassis numbers MA939976 onwards, that there are two options: AMR 3483 - "lowline" and AMR 3484 - "Highline". First thing is that this confirms my chassis number to a degree - it is after MA939976 - which I guess is a good thing. Second - what's lowline and highline? Thanks Jeremy - simply because someone might have more info to add. Autosparks have a system which is showing it as a 1996 200Tdi vehicle.... which I think would be a pretty rare beast indeed. It's a bit disappointing because it does make me question slightly how acccurate things would be. What the h*ll - it's MA943123.. It would be worth checking the price of the genuine looms, but through a dealer with your VIN which should narrow down high line or low line.
I'm not certain on that era but I would think yours is High Line (factory fit alarm?) |

thanks again, definitely no alarm on mine. It was actually a "utility" station wagon, as opposed to a 'County' type trim - so rubber mats instead of carpets. Vinyl seats instead of fabric.
Just off the phone though to autosparks again, and they say there are two key identifiers which would help them pin it down - a 300Tdi loom has a 13way econoseal plug between the main harness and the rear chassis harness; and a 4xway maxi-fuse box somewhere on the bulkhead. The 200Tdi doesn't have either of those. So that will help pin it down one way or t'other. I guess that means I'm sorted - I can get my answer easily enough by popping the bonnet and getting out the camera. On the downside, they don't stock the 300, so that's a 6-8 week delivery time. It would put the 'dash out' job back a bit - but at least the weather would be warmer! ... just as an add on. I did that for the 200Tdi part number they gave me. I think it was Craddocks that came up first... roughly £1500 + VAT.... I wouldn't be doing it at that price. Thanks Lotus,
That's good info. There must have been an awful lot of 'random' variation in what's fitted though. I reckon mine would be 'lowline' - a utility spec SW bought as an airfield ops vehicle by our local airport operator. It didn't have any speaker/stereo wiring (i don't remember even seeing the bullets behind th dash when I fitted the radio) but it did have a rear load area light, and probably a light switch in the door. I say 'probably' 'cos none of my door light switches has worked for many years. No alarm fitted either. It must also be a very early 300Tdi loom. It has the rubber block connectors on the steering loom, fog light on a steering column stalk. Referring back to the advice from Autosparks, it does have the 4xway maxi fuse box on the bulkhead, and the 13way multi-connector with the engine loom. I've emailed them pics for confirmation yesterday, just waiting for a reply. ..So I've had a call back from autosparks. Based on the pictures I sent of the maxi fuse box, and 13 way connector, they agree it's a 300Tdi loom, and an early one at that.
FWIW here's the pics Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Autosparks are suggesting an LR part number of AMR4082. We've talked through some of the key components - the maxi fuse box and multiplug as above; moulded bullet connector blocks for the column switches; dim dip and integrated headlight connectors, and these all align with that part number - but before I commit to getting a new harness made up, does anyone have any advice on this? It's not a disaster if it's made up and doesn't match the car. They'll take it back into stock if it's in unused condition, but there's the lead time of getting it made. So, as always, any help much appreciated. You do know that the part number is on the loom?
Its stamped on a yellow tape wrapped around the loom -usually behind the main fuse board or behind the dash heater tray |

Thanks - I hadn't thought of that - doh! - though I have seen pictures of other looms and ought to have made the connection.
The problem is that this is my daily car, and not a 'garage project' so to speak. To minimise 'downtime' I'm hoping to take the dashboard out; have all the various parts and jobs to hand; and then swap over. I'd rather not take the dash out to the point where I can find this label, to have to refit and then strip down again when the new loom arrives. But of course, you've made a really good point - that it's one way to be 100% certain. I guess I can take a peek behind the fuse box and see if the label is visible there. Thanks (PS - thanks Martin for changing the thread title!)
