As far as I can remember for swapping out my Defender spec 10P for a Discovery spec 10P was the outlet adapter on the power steering pump is different - you need to swap the Defender one over.
Also the Discovery turbocharger has a solenoid actuator on the wastegate vacuum pipe, which the Defender doesn't. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Hallo Frank,
I am not sure of there are any differences. If you want to replace aen td5 engine in a td5 Defender I think you can use a Disco engine. Any parts that might be different are probably around the turbo. The manifold might be different and the wastegate is controoled by the ecu on a disco and mechanical on a Defender. But you will have alle the parts that are different so that will not be a problem. If you want to build it in your V8 ( I wouldn't understand why) you probably need a lot more parts as the dash is also ECU controlled so you have to change that too. And to get it working you might need a few more sensors, different fuel pump etc. Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

Fitted a Discovery 15P engine to our 90. There aren't any differences really other than the ECU map, certainly nothing that will cause an issue. It's not like the 300TDi where the Turbo was in a different place. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Hello,
Thanks for all the info. I will go and buy a Discovery to get a new engine. Can you use the turbo form the Discovery and only change the ECU and waistgate meganism from the Defender or do you need to use the turbo from the defender too? Reason that I need another engine is that on my way to the alps my engine died on the German Autobahn. There is a hole in the engine. It is a 2002 Defender with P15 engine. Click image to enlarge |

Last weekend I took the old engine out. so here some picks of the damage.
Click image to enlarge I also checked the oilpumb bolt and it is tight and there is no play on the sprocket. I think I just had bad luck. |

This week I bought a Discovery 2 of 2003. The engine sounded good, fluitds were ok, so I bought it and drove the car from Amsterdam home.

Lovely weather yesterday again so the engine is out. now I'm able to compaire the Defender and Discovery engines.
Click image to enlarge As far as I can see, all connectors are the same, except the Discovery has a turbo waistgate valve extra. Difference in the wiring is that in the Discovery the ECU computer sits on the right front under the bonnet and in the Defender it is in the right site seatbase box. this means thet the cables are routed different and so the lengths are different. Now both engines are in the shed so this week I can clean the new motor and compaire them further. Frank |

I have just done this swap, as Martin said the Pas pump has a different union and the turbo has an added wastegate control all easily sorted, mine came with a/c so I had to remove the pump and fit the additional idler from my old block other than that it was all the same, if you look at my Buggsy thread there will be some pics of the swap 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html
