I guess the question is; How important is that 10% off road ability?
If really not very important then I would go no more aggressive than an AT, in fact if the vehicle is a cruiser then I would consider a very road biased tread pattern, something like the BF Goodrich Long trail or Michelin Latitude. At a push the Cooper AT3 as it is a 60/40 or the BFG AT KO2 which I love to bits, fabulous all round all year all conditions tyre. As for sizing the standard 235/85/16 would work very well. If you wanted a slightly more chunky look then the 265/75/16 would work as well. I would not go any bigger than that. |

thank you for coming back so quickly. Looks like 2 great minds as I was thinking along the lines of the Michelin Latitude, which I think I will go with, however I will give the BFG Long Trail. Size wise I think that I will stick with the 235/85/16 unless I get an amazing deal on 265/75/16. The off road really is not that important for the TD5 as I am lucky enough to have a 110 300 TDi that will take those duties on if needed. Thank you. |

No Cruise control... I know that I must be mad, I have had a variety of cars including M3 / M5 and a 911, however the Defender gives me that practicality that is so useful. The maintenance costs are not that high, engine oil will be changed every 2 months and the transfer case oil every 4. I am going to change the ratio of the transfer box and put a Disco 2 unit in it which should serve to drop the cruising revs a bit, when this is done I will get the Alive tuning remap with larger intercooler and stainless exhaust. Once you get used to plugging along at 70 mph on the motorway it really is not to much of a problem. I do have additional sound deadening though which helps. It is also pretty nice being a little different and parking the 110 in the various corporate car parks that are awash with BMW / Audi / Mercedes. ![]() Thanks |

Been very happy with the Cooper A/T3's. Never ever have experienced the impression of limited grip, even on wet cobblestones. Having sipes will probably have something to do with it.
They're silent too, and they do much better on terrain as initially expected. Greetings, Joris |

Our TD5 110 is used on road 99% of the time - I've just fitted a set of 235/85/16 Michelin Latitude Cross all round on new black boost alloys and it's soooo much better - huge noise reduction and the braking feels better in the wet, corners better - all great!
Admittedly the previous tyres were a right mongrel mix and some old and hard, but it's deffo been the best change I've done so far. Just need to get round to getting shot of the old Boosts now as they don't half get in the way in the garage! ![]() |

If you opt for larger diameter tires than stock that will almost negate the need for the Disco 2 transfer box swap. It may also result in a more comfortable ride. For tires I'm not sure if you have those in the UK but the BFG Commercial T/A Traction is a fantastic cross between road worthy and off road worthy. |

^^^ i tried to get that specific tyre a while back and couldnt in the UK.

I think a tuned Td5 could pull higher gearing still. Mine has 285/60r18 with puma Qcut transfer box and disco V8 5th ratio in the gearbox and I would still like to drop the revs further for motorway work.
Currently 80 mph is around 2700 rpm. It would be better, I feel, if was closer to about 2200 rpm. Cruise control is an absolute must in my opinion. I got about 80,000 miles from my front BFG MTRs and my rear ones are still going strong at 85K.
Theyre as well behaved as a road tyre. Can't beat BFGs. ![]() |
