I've seen a torch on La Mante (Netflix), that can be used as a protection against assailants. When activated it emits a powerful flashing that disorientates when shined in their eyes.

Even Aldi sells such now and again. I have bought two sizes from them. The type of torch you mention also has a serrated end that should you ram it into someone's head or ribs will also disable them. Just make sure wherever you buy the torch it has at the very least a 12 W Cree led, 20 W is better.

No torch is truly disorienting when pointed in your eyes, despite what TV/adverts would tell you. Look at something greater than 1000 Lumens, ignore wattage. Anythin sold by watts rather than brightness (both lumens and lux) is just trying to blind you (haha) with numbers.
Also, anything that's "normal" torch sized, and around £20, and claims crazy outputs (over 1500 lumens) is probably also a lie! Fenix, Nitecore, BLF, Klarus etc are all good brands. |

I have misplaced my 3 cell (DD) maglite that would be kept near my bed just in case.... I needed to see something
Anyway by today's standards with a Haligen bulb its very poor anyway. Whats an equivalent in size for £20 / £30 cheers |

Seeing as we're talking torches... I was going to ask this anyway, and up pops a thread on torches! It's not quite on topic, but....
For ages I've kept a maglite in the car - robust, and slots nicely between the driver's seat and cubby box. It's a 3 D cell version. But in this cold weather, with 'normal' batteries, it can be pretty feeble. Does anyone have a torch / battery combo that copes better with minus or near freezing temperatures?? I'm guessing LEDs would put less demand on the battery, but as with LED headlights, there's a lot out there and some of it might not be up to much. Sadly the laws of nature dictate that batteries produce zero volts at zero degrees centigrade. You could keep your torch somewhere warm, I'm sure that people on here would suggest a suitable place!
Being serious for a moment. some batteries, lithium iron perhaps, will give maximum voltage until they collapse, unlike alkaline ones that just fade. So the battery type maybe be your saviour. Merlin |

I tend not to store torches there .... especially not a long maglite!
Li-ion usually means rechargeable, no? Maybe I'll look at something that's chargeable in the car. Cheers. check out OLIGHT, I have the SRMINI INTIMIDATOR II. Great little piece of kit. Can be charged via usb, and has the strobe function too. At the lowest setting the batteries last up to 6 - 8 hours.
