Hi All
What are the current UK regulations for trailers: Should each trailer have a V5 or similar document and is there an annual MOT requirement? Are homemade trailers permitted on the roads? Thanks David Dave's not here man... |

It depends to an extent on the trailer but no V5 required and no MOT.
Home made trailers are allowed providing they have a plate or similar with some basic information which, from memory, just means they have to have a date of manufacture and max laden weight. That said, just because a trailer doesn't need to have an MOT, it still needs to be safe and in good condition and comply with the appropriate regulations for it's weight. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

A little off topic but worth mentioning if you are looking at the 2nd hand market, some manufacturers such as Ifor Williams hold their own database of who purchased each trailer from their dealers. You can ring up upon selling one and move the details to the new owner but also call them to find out if a 2nd hand version has been stolen. This database is linked to The National Plant and Equipment Register (TER). The information on stolen trailers is solely dependent on the victim having reported it to them but worth checking given how many of them go walkies.

A friend down the road loaned me his Ifor Williams farm trailer last year. A really nice piece of kit! I hear trailers are high risk theft items here. This one was equipped with a lock on the hitch. It also was kept under lock and key in the barn.

Sadly you can no longer just 'knock up' a home made trailer from scratch. To be legal it has to have an IVA inspection before it can be used, this is quite expensive and aimed mostly at professionally manufactured trailers. See the inspection manual here:
https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/syst...ailers.pdf However totally legal to buy an old trailer which has been rotting in someones hedge for years and rebuild it. Obviously trailers need to be roadworthy (although i see plenty which arnt) the IVA manual will give you a good idea of mudflap/lighting/ secondary restraint and braking requirements for trailers and really sets the standard for what is classed as roadworthy.
