United Kingdom 2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 USW Santorini Black
Cylinder head temp sensor
I’ve searched on here and have learned that the 2.4 puma doesn’t have a water temp sensor, only a cylinder head temp sensor, am I right in thinking that this sensor CHT, gives my scanguage a reading for the water temperature? I think I’m in need of a new CHT sensor as mine starts off about 45 degrees 🤔 thanks, Harry NO ROAD..........EXCEPT FOR LANDROVER

My BAS diagnostic tool shows CHT and coolant temp for my 2.4.

They are definitely different readings. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

My scanguage gives 2 separate readings for the water temp and the cylinder head temp, but I’m lead to believe that the water temperature reading somehow comes from the CHT sensor as the 2.4 doesn’t have a coolant temperature sensor. I think my CHT sensor has started acting the goat, as it reads about 50 when you start up first thing! Thanks, Harry NO ROAD..........EXCEPT FOR LANDROVER

On mine they seem independent, tracking each other as you'd expect, but with variations like lag between the two when powering up hills in low range, or coasting on downhills at speed.

(I've been watching them both recently as I just swapped out my radiator)

Where does the reading come from if there is no sensor? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Might not be the best with really cold starts as the glow plug duration is set according to the CHT.. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Excuse the 3 posts in a row.. Rolling Eyes

So I just read the other posts on the matter (the 'there is no ECT sensor' posts), I'm wondering now if the ECT is combined in with the CHT?

I know for instance that the MAF and MAP respectively share the IAT1 and IAT2 sensing elements (intake temps), so it's not without precedent.

How many wires come and go from the CHT?

If there is no ECT then perhaps the ECU is indirectly making them up as a function of other parameters, but that seems a bit cart before the horse right? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

cylinder head temp sensor and coolant temp sensor on puma tdci 2.4 engine one in the same. placed at back of cylinder head

So I am going to order a new sensor, but I would like to know when the temp needle is at half way, what is your water temp and cylinder head temp? To get a rough idea of what ”normal “ is. Thanks, Harry NO ROAD..........EXCEPT FOR LANDROVER

Be aware the temperature gauge will read "normal" even though the engine temperatures are fluctuating when we drive.
Below is copied from the RAVE for the 2.4 engine.

Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge.
The ECT gauge is driven by high speed CAN bus messages from the ECM. For normal operating temperatures the gauge needle pointer is positioned centrally in the gauge display. The needle pointer position translates to the following approximate temperatures.
Engine Coolant Temperature °C (°F) Needle Pointer Position...
Ignition off Park position.
40 (104) Cold (blue segment).
75 - 115 (167 - 239) Normal (central).
120 (248) Start of hot (red segment).
125 (257) End of hot.

I also found this which may be of interest...
High Engine Coolant Temperature Indicator.
The high ECT indicator is illuminated on receipt of a high speed CAN bus message from the ECM. The indicator illuminates when the ignition is turned to position II for a 3 second bulb check and is extinguished when the engine is started. If the indicator illuminates while driving, a fault in the engine cooling system has become present and the engine must be stopped at the earliest opportunity. Cheers,

I also fond out LR-fords have two sec for sender i.e cold climate and hot Exclamation
