Summer Off roading in the Grenoble area
seen a few posts on travelling in and around this area. Understand roads/towns will be busier then and may be limited access to trails. My plan is to take kids to do a bungee jump - on their bucket list - in early July near Grenoble and to couple this with some trail driving on the way down and in the area as well as seeking out some quieter camp sites. I assume there is no wild camping.

Would appreciate any insight on trail options/access and campsites.

There are some really great tracks throughout the Alps , have a look at www dangerousroads.org and you can find some great tracks (not all are dangerous), also Google gravel roads Alps and some of the German bike sites have some good info.
Have done some good tracks a bit further south of Grenoble in the Maritime Alps , it is a beautiful place in the summer and trip down can be special if not in too much of a hurry.
Have fun ,

Nick.

Just be aware the laws governing off-roading usually either completely ban 4x4s during July and August, or limit them to use before 0800 and after 1800. Walkers/trail runners take priority. Remember that Grenoble is in the Savoie (73) but that the Haute Savoie may have different rules. Some trails may be run locally at commune level, some by the National Parks authority. Can be confusing, but get it right, Gendarmes do head up on trail bikes to catch people and fines can be hefty. It will be busier, but lots of motorways to connect the key regions, just stay off the road if you can during the peak times for tourists arriving/leaving the region: Fri pm, Sat am, Sun pm. In Grenoble area, avoid the Route Napoleon, it will be hell. Camping is abundant. Note, if you overnight off road on any of the mountains, you cannot pitch a tent. Roof tent or bivvie bag, no problem. There's a nice lake near Briancon where you can free camp right on the waters edge. Can't remember name. Look on Google, it's pretty much due south, 20mins or so. There's a Bungy Jump off the bridge in Saint Gervais where I live, and I could always take you on a couple of trails here, either to great restaurants, or Cols, or refuges etc. Finally, not sure how long you plan to stay, but the Tour de France will be coming to the region so check dates to see it or avoid it. Feel free to PM for more questions. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Looks amazing. Cycled passed there last summer and thought how fantastic the area would be for some wild camping and cycling. Came in the DC, beautiful drive via (but not over) some of the most famous climbs in the world. Sadly just out and back trip in 24hrs. Will definitely go back this year with Mrs Grenadier Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier
