2.2 G/Box T/Boxoil spec
Hi
Going to change the gearbox and transfer box oils on my 2.2

The book says gearbox spec is WSDM2C200-C Which is a 75W-90 oil
The book says transfer box is SAE 75W/90

So can I use the same oil in both boxes

I was going for the Opie Motul gear 300 75W-90 fully synth as suggested by Opie

The original if I recall was a special BOT130 oil by Castrol, which seems to have been superceded by BOT328 - part number LR006519, which even comes in a Land Rover box - very posh.

Meanwhile the OEM version listed at many parts suppliers at half the price also by Castrol is their Syntrans Multivehicle - last time I checked the specs (temps/viscosity etc.) they matched exactly.

I've used all three in my 2.4 puma, no difference felt or heard and the box appears to be running just fine - in fact, perhaps even better lately (1st to 2nd snick now a thing of the past).

On the other hand, the transfer box is much more old school and less fussy in it's oil requirements. I don't have my notes on hand but I thought it used the same as the diffs, which are meant to have an 85W/90 - perhaps I'm wrong? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Tbox: GL4 or GL5
Gbox: GL4 only. (I use Toyota gearbox oil with excelent results. As you would expect from anything coming from Toyota Whistle )
Diffs: GL5 only Puma 110" SW

There is a specific oil for the gearbox on the Puma.

It's a fully synthetic, and only needs changing every 10 years or something.

You only need 2.2 litres, it's not a spill fill gearbox.

The transfer box and diffs are just spill fill and just use 80w90GL5 for the diffs and 75w90 for the transferbox, but as agentmulder said you can get away will pretty much anything in those aproximate viscosity ranges.

Anyhow I have not had any problems, but local indie puts trans 75-90 Penrite synthetic in everything other than the motor. No worries at all, all you do is up spec the oil , and one oil covers all. Same with the motor oil, goes in the Mazda 2015 max, as the deafener. Motor oil, I buy it in 20 litre drums and chuck a pumper on. Sometimes it’s cheaper and just easier, I just fill the weed sprayer with oil of one kind and go for it. If it is easy you are more inclined to do it. It’s either tranny or motor oil then cold beer! ... something about some component in the gearbox being made of a certain material that degrades faster over time in standard oils and the BOT- oils specifically manufactured to counter that... ? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

GL-4 oil has about 1/2 of the sulfur-phosphorous additive to prevent corrosion on yellow metals Puma 110" SW

Hi Thanks for all the input and extremely interesting information. I certainly know more about oils spec now.

I must also comment on the truly international membership of this forum
We started in leicester then on to Jafa, Santiago, Western Australia then back to Jafa and Santiago. Finally back to good old blighty and Notts/Lincs and Leicester.

Sorry for the late reply. Your land rover needs to meet the Ford 948B spec, will add links below for suitable options. As for your manual transmission fluid, you need a GL4 75W90, will add a couple of suitable options also for you.

You need a 75w-90 GL5 oil for your Transfer box and Differential

The Millers CRX NT, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS, Amsoil Severe Gear and Gulf Competition are ideal as top end options.
The Millers TRX Synthetic/EE Nanodrive, Mobil SHC, Castrol Syntrax Universal Plus and Valvoline Synpower TDL are good, but a step down from the top oils.
Fuchs Gear Syn, Motul Motylgear, Millers TRX Semi and Castrol Universal are good, cheaper options.

With reference to MK talking about GL4 only in gear boxes
The link below explains why you must not use GL5 in Gearbox even if the supplier quotes suitable for GL4 and GL5 Its to do with the adverse effect of GL5 oils on the synchromesh componants.
