Depends if you want to be legal or not. In the UK anyways.

Factory glass is usually tinted to the maximum allowed amount. 2011 Defender DCPU 2.2 - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic30623.html

And it's not as if tinted front windows aren't obvious to any passing police car.

70% should keep you legal, depending on age.

doesn't a 70% tint mean the glass would only let 30% of light through?

Indeed it does. Be very careful on my first Defender I was stopped by the police and VOSA and had to remove tinting on the spot. 2015 HT XS 90

I’m pretty sure tints are labelled with the amount of light they let through.

So a 70% Tint lets 70% of the light through.

You have to factor in the glass manufacturer tint strength and add the two together. Most front windows are already at their max before having a tint applied.

The glass is marked as As1 which is no tint and for a widescreen, AS2 which has the highest tint that is legal for front side windows and AS3 which can be used elsewhere (based on if it were a van you wouldn't have any other glass.
Of course this will only be of interest if you want to stay legal.

I wouldn't tint the side windows because the law was made as tinting side windows was considered a serious risk to visibility particularly at night. Defenders are favourites to be stopped at any time owing to the amount stolen and also a number that use red diesel. So while the police MAY not stop you just on account of your tinted windows it may be the deciding factor in whether you do get stopped or not. If you are stopped the standard way of dealing as well as a fine is a rip across the whole tint with the instruction to remove the rest before using it or a Vehicle Defect Rectification Notice which when added to your fine makes it a very expensive day. Of course worse than that would be if you had an accident where it was thought your tint was a causation factor and then things would get very much worse.

Having driven vehicles with tinted windows from 50% to the darker end of the scale letting 5% of light through they are a nightmare, freezing cold at night having to drive with the windows down just so I could see anything.

if you want subtle, a 70% tint film over your factory tinted glass will give you just a little extra, but not make it privacy glass. it will help keep the cab slightly cooler and very unlikely to get you any hassle from the police, although will be over the legal limit.
