New 110 - clonk on stopping engine and whine on no-load ?
Hi I have a new Puma Defender 110 (done 150 miles) It whines a lot from the rear but only without load (as in off throttle). I also have a bit of clonk when I turn off the ignition coming from the gearbox beneath my cubby box area. Its not a loud clonk - can live with it if it's just a quirky thing.

I did a search and the whine thing is mentioned by some of you guys - some say it's normal others not. My 110 is actually a year old but done very little miles. Will it bed in? Is it doing damage? Or is it just a noise?

My mate says the whine is normal and he has had it more so in 110's - I have had TD5 90's a few years back and they did not do this.

Trouble is the supplying dealer is a long way from where I live Confused

My TDCi has now done 15K and there is no whine. But my previous TD5 whined at around 100-110kph when coming off the throttle. It sounded like the rear diff but the dealer assured me it was the transfer gears. These were replaced under warranty and the whine went.

However, I get a rattly clonking noise when starting or stopping the TDCi. Not there if the clutch pedal is depressed. I will raise it with the dealer next service.

Pob, the whining comes from the rear diff. I'll have to replace mine next week for the same problem.
It occurs in many Td4.

Thanks for the replies, how long will it last as it is? I can not take it back to the dealer for a month or maybe two months - will it matter? What's the worse that can happen?

I've done almost 15000 Kilometers in this conditions. The noise is there since the car was new. Is getting louder, but since now I had no problems.

Spoke to dealer (who is brilliant) and they have suggested I see how it beds in with some mileage and if it's an issue they will sort it out - on that note I am happy. I will see if it lessens Very Happy

I get the opinion that as long as it's logged with the dealer then it's going to be covered if it goes pop. My whine is not deafening or anything it's just there. I am happy to run with it and see. I have 2 years warranty left so plenty of time to see if it gets worse.

The noise you hear when you turn on or off the engine is the springs of the clutch disc falling apart,I΄ve just changed mine with a new ....improved type as LR says. NOT A TRANSIT
