It is suspicious that it is happening during a period of colder weather, so as above initially suspect that your glow plugs might need attention and check your battery is charged and is being charged by the alternator.
Inicidentally I have changed changed all my glow plugs as all of them were dead... |

My problems were down to 15 years of crap and crud getting into the motor. Cleaned it out and it starts better than ever, a week of poor starting, symptoms that were pointing me to bad diesel delivery and other things and it was all down to crap in the motor..

I had starting problems too, After changing my glowplugs I thaught it had to be the batteries but used another one without improvement so I cleaned my starter motor and the contacts. But I noticed it was still turning heavy by hand. I opened the gearbox part and the grease in there was very tough. I cleaned that too and put some multipupose grease in and now it starts like neven before. Roel

I'd be looking at the simple fixes first, yes glow plugs can be suspect at this time of year but, the Td5 can be started without them. The biggest thing with the Td5 is being able to spin it over with no hassle, dirty solonoid contacts can create a magnetic distubance which then affects the crank sensor, poor earths can compromise good electric flow to the starter. We all know what a PITA getting the starter motor on and off can be, mainly due to that 15mm nut that sits hidden at the back, get a method that sorts that nut and it becomes a job you think nothing of, not a task.
The Td5 is quite a robust engine even with all the reliance on the wonders of electrickery and compared to todays engines is a very simple system. Yes a decent diagnostic kit is essential if you do your own spanner work but there's still a lot of old school logic required, with my starting problem I was convinced that it was a diesel problem, it wouldn't start without full throttle and then reluctantly either hot or cold. If you can't start normally, needs some cranking etc, then the injectors aren't to know this and will keep pumping the diesel in so don't be surprised to get a fair bit of smoke and lumpy running at the start. Even a perfectly set up Td5 will run a bit off when started cold as No.5 cylinder has no heat in the bore, some people are convinced that No.5 injector doesn't even give any fuelling untill the engine runs. The big thing is to make sure all the basics are sound before worrying about the more complex features of the engine |

In answser to the OP, sounds a lot like cardiac insufficiency likely due to decreased output. Suggest you get a radio-opaque dye injection followed closely by a full cardiac computed tomography (CT) scan. You’ll probably find this will reveal some occluded arteries (or artery) which will need stents. Once sorted properly you’ll feel great again.
