But I don't think that's so. JLR are going for high profit margins, but not volume. If volume (and smaller individual profits, but larger overall profit) was their chief concern then it would have made sense to stick with a smaller Freelander - like the original. Look how successful the Vauxhall Mokka has been, or the Skoda Yeti. But JLR want to go for expensive models that sell reasonably well. They don't want to be a VW, or a Vauxhall, or a Renault. Personally, I think they have it wrong. If I were put in charge of JLR then I'd focus on lesser-cost models that I can sell more of. Now left.

The summing up at the end of that article is pretty much my own sentiments. Starved of development, the Defender has not had a chance to evolve.
A massive step with a new model will surely mean lots of issues to sort out. I'm really tempted with the new Rubicon and will be looking at it when it arrives in the UK. If it gets the 3.0 diesel option later that would be better still. |

I'm not sure that's true. Much has been made of the fact that, despite it's 'iconic' status, the Defender never sold more than about 20k units per year and that the replacement needs to appeal to a wider audience so that it sells 100k units per year to be economic to build. I don't know how that compares to the G or Jeep, although the latter has a wide appeal in a much bigger home market, so I suspect that, at least, is a very difficult comparison. The reality is that LR are currently making a very desirable family of cars that, on the whole, they can sell all that they can build. The Defender replacement has to stack up against them rather than what other companies are making to justify its' assembly space. Yes, but they would the native US market is huge, much bigger than ours and our country too.
Couple that with being deeply enriched in US history it's not surprising. There is also US exports too, I'd imagine quite a few go out to Dubai and the UAE and places like that too. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

Agreed. I wasn't really making any point just giving a number to the previous poster who said he didn't know how the numbers compared to 20k a year for Defender. |

I know.
It's very sad indeed that it's brilliant that the US keeps their tradition going, but we lose ours. And why? It's not our choice... Part and partial was funding as to why LR moved over to Tata years ago anyway. Who did the govt help fund, you guessed it. Euro Marques such as Citroen and the like. I can't remember the exact way things occurred back then, but that was what happened. What ever Ford may or may not be, in my view with the exclusion of the Disco 4 which was very nice. Since Ford sold up it was downhill since then, was the Disco 4 designed by Ford or Tata? Not sure as to when that way exactly now tough. That's just my humble opinion, but not much of the current LR range appeals to me that much. Not as much as it used to, they all look similar and all look like a Kia or similar passenger style SUV. I think apt100's post gives you your answer. If Jeep are selling 200k units p.a. then it's clearly worthwhile to keep making and developing it. Don't be fooled into thinking it's because they've got a greater sense of history or sentimentality about it than us. There is little of either in the business of car mass production. Darren

/\ I think that's right, there is only cold, hard, business in car manufacturing, not sentamentality (a little, perhaps). Land Rover's mistakes (oh where to start?) was to not evolutionise the Defender, and also not running with the DC100. I know many here hate hit, but I still say it would have been a hit. I was shocked when they dropped it. And as I keep saying, there IS going to be a strong resemblance between the new Defender and the DC100, so they might as well have gone with it!

I hope it's a bit Disco 4 style but a bit smaller, and a bit higher. KEEP CALM AND Drill ON

Thatโs a really interesting article, thanks for posting. Jeep selling 200,000 units a year can be both an incentive and a problem for Land Rover. Iโve hired numerous jeeps whilst visiting the good old USA and I really enjoyed my time in them. I think most defender owners would be happy with the same progression. But under investment and new company direction may well result in a new defender not hitting the mark with us old traditional folk, or not being built at all. Since the defender ceased production we have a new discovery, velar, Range Rover sport and a revised evoque in the pipeline. 2017 became 2018 which is now 2019. If you canโt wait for the eternal promise to come true, then a Jeep just may prove a viable option to those that want something more rugged. Time will tell, but we may have seen the last of defender. I sincerely hope not, but rather nothing at all rather than another Cheshire lifestyle hack
