Fabbi Ski Rack - Mantec Swing Away Carrier Advised?
I know we're out of season, but my friend who's just bought a SW is considering upgrades for the future. He shall be buying a Fabbi spare-wheel ski rack and was wondering if, with a Sawtooth spare wheel, whether the rear door strength will suffice or if a mantec (or similar) swing away spare wheel carrier would be advised? Any thoughts or experiences? Ta Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Watching with interest, I really like the Fabbi bike carrier but concerned about weight. I was resisting spare wheel carriers as I understand they all end up rattling sooner or later? James

Having said that, loads of Defender owners out here use them and it's not as if SW doors are falling off all over the place. Just thinking whether £350 plus fitting for the Mantec is worth the hassle for the rack, given you open the door four times a day during a ski trip. Once when loading, once when at the pistes, again when loading and finally when unloading back home. The rest of the time the door is locked and therefore supported. I also think the Fabbi, not to mention 5-6 pairs of modern skis, is likely quite light, whereas I have seen all manner of locally built, steel contraptions hanging off rear wheels, but again with no apparent problems. I know people do talk of the door hinges being weak, but how much abuse and weight are we really talking about? Thousands of Defs have been made, how many doors fall off or even start fitting/closing badly for it to be considered a genuine concern? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Patience is a virtue
Possess it if you can
It's rarely found in women

My inexperienced opinion would be for ski's it would be fine (bikes different matter maybe).

The Nakatanenga is probably the best wheel carrier and only bolts to the cross member so no additional holes in body but £600! Also won't work with rear bumperettes.

For that sort of money you might see how it goes and get a full door refurb when necessary? James

Exactly my thoughts. Thuile do an excellent bike carrier that fits on the tow ball, I wonder if they do the same for skis? That would be perfect option. Great build quality, well considered design (folds down away from the door to allow access) and sensibly priced. Will check.... Monsieur Le Grenadier

Evening folks - did you guys ever progress this?

I am looking at one of these http://www.fabbri-racks.co.uk/catalogue/de...xv%2fjM%3d

Bit Pricey but I need it for snowboards and skis. Been offered one just for skis at €80 so maybe I should change my allegiance!

Any help appreciated!

Went with the one on your link, SW now owned by somebody esle, but they love the Fabbri. TBH, most Defs out here use them, very popular. If you've been offered one at 80€ I'd bite their arm off if in good nick. Or have you been offered another brand/model? Monsieur Le Grenadier

Thanks Grenadier - it's only the ski version I've found out so no good for me sadly. Will keep my eyes peeled for a another second hand version that can accommodate boards and skis. Agreed from my time in the Alps it seems to be the rack of choice!

I've used one a few times, borrowed from a mate. Really useful bit of kit.

Edit: I dont have a spare wheel carrier and suffered no problems.

That'll learn ya for being on the dark side. If that's where you want to stay, this might help...

Age will catch up with me soon and one stick will become two!

Thanks for the info! Guessing I could buy the second hand rack and then the adaption kit.

You say that but I actually switched from 2 to 1 about 15 years ago because of a knee injury. I found there was less lateral movement and stress on my ligaments when boarding. These days I can't ski for more than a few hours without serious swelling and pain whereas I can just about manage 2 weeks straight snowboarding.
