Removing a previously replaced rear crossmember
I was hoping to get some advice on removing a previously replaced rear crossmember with 20" extensions, as it has once again rusted out and is delaminating (the frame appears solid otherwise). I am specifically trying to find out about how to get the old crossmember off without damaging the existing frame so I can weld on the new one with the same 20" extensions.

Can I just simply grind down the existing welds or is there some other trick I need to be aware of?

Can you post some pics of what you are trying to do?
Do you have another complete 20in extension, or just the crossmember and want to graft the new rear crossmember onto the already replaced extensions?

Thanks for the help. I'm removing a previously replaced rear crossmember that had the 20" extensions with a new replacement rear crossmember with 20" extensions. The previous crossmember was replaced by the prior owner or the MOD, but needs to be replaced again. I'm wondering if I can simply grind off the old welds (seen in photo) and slide on the new one in the same exact spot and reweld. It seems fairly easy when doing it the first time, but seems a bit more difficult since it is already be replaced. I'm concerned about getting the old one off without damaging the chassis/frame rails underneath so I can still slide on the new one.

Ok i see.
Looks like they didnt weld the overlap down next to the outrigger or it is a very fine weld bead so it should be OK ( based on what i can see in the pic)
I think your plan is sound.....all you can do is carefully grind away the old weld without digging into the original chassis and carefully work your way around. Is it welded on top as well? You might need to remove the tub if that is the case.

Thanks Patrick. I honestly haven't looked to see if the top is welded, but I do plan to take the tub off once in place and the sides are welded. I want to clean things up and look for other signs of corrosion.
