Coolant leak?
When I had my td5 services 4 months ago they said coolant was empty, just checking now and there in none in the bottle. So is there any common causes for this I can check? I've not had any issues but I don't do many miles.

Under the exhaust manifold towards the front end, is a good start,
Look to see if you have any pink or white marks anywhere?
It's common for the Bung to leak there.

Other than that, check hoses, and along the bottom and top of the rad, again pink or white stains indicate a leak.

Going deeper, could be H/G failure? But check that last!

As Ian says.

I am just a little further down the road than you. Story: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic53859.html

Page 1 covers the replacement of the threaded bung under the exhaust manifold.

For now though I would fill your coolant system up and monitor the level religiously every day (to begin with). Make sure there is clear coolant coming out of the bleed screw on the top hose.

Will be getting mine back on Monday, I hope...

Can I just top up the coolant , or do I need to flush system first? What type do I need to buy?

Ideally you would mix up a 50/50 OAT coolant to water and add that to your expansion tank until coolant runs freely out of the bleed screw.

But...

...in a pinch you can fill up with 100% water to get you home. But, you should drain and refill with a 50/50 solution ASAP afterwards.

You can pick up OAT coolant from any local parts stores (Euro, Halfords, etc.).

Whilst trying to figure out what was wrong with mine I did drive around with 5L of 50/50 mix just to keep the Ol'Girl going whilst problem shooting.

Opine Oils has a good range of OAT coolant. I personally use the pre mix, more expensive yes but better performance and less minerals added into the system.

There was around a 1.C temp difference when I swapped mine. No Guts, No Glory.

Try a new coolant bottle cap the seals sometimes go and it's cheap. Only get genuine or oem obviously. Ray

Mines a Puma so cannot comment, but the sooner you get it fixed the cheaper it will be as I have previously found.

Also do your best to ensure all spills are contained or cleaned up, as coolant is dealy to animals and wildlife. No Guts, No Glory.

Also as already suggested above check for coolant colour traces.

Check hoses and water pump body and joints, including radiator.

I kept thinking it would be a hose or radiator on mine and instead it was the waterpump, dealer tried to lift me of £580 to replace. Shocked

Sorted my own for £150. No Guts, No Glory.

Other culprits are the heater matrix ( look for fluid/stains at the bottom of the heater box where it bolts onto the passenger footwell) or where the top hose connects to the cylinder head (assuming you dont have A/C there is large alloy casting underneath it which collects a pool of coolant). I replaced my top hose to stop the leak but the outlet on the head was too corroded and undersize so swapped that too to finally stop the leak. Both easy checks to make but you would be best to take the acoustic cover off.

I had the problem of loosing 2" of coolant from the expansion bottle over a 4 week period, this had been happening for about 18 months, I checked all the possible places for sign of a leak an the sign that it was getting past the head gasket all to no avail.

Four weeks ago I called into the local Indy for advice re the noise coming from the Alternator and the possibility of swapping the pulley and the idler, I removed to top half of the radiator /fan cover so he could get a better look , I then found out that a seam in the near side of the Radiator was leaking just enough to run most of the way to the bottom but not enough to run out of the bottom. The Indy says it's not the first time he has seen it so It me be worth having a look. Don't make old people mad.
We don't like being old in the first place,
so it doesn't take much to Censored us off.

Thanks my alternator belt is squeeling a lot these days , that's on the list too. I have seen liquid run out / drip below the radiator before I'll take a closer look in case it's coolant next time.

ok, i bought the anti freeze red stuff on weekend ready to top up but not got round to it yet. i drove it a few miles this morning to see if the heating works . However i was playing with the fan speed selector set it to the lowest position and i cant feel any air coming out near windscreen or feet either hot or cold . Ive never noticed before because i only bought in the summer and do very few miles so not really tested it .
