Remote Switch
I have a 3 metre boom sprayer which I tow behind my Defender for spraying my grass paddocks. The sprayer utilises a 12 volt dc electric pump to pressurise the system. The sprayer is wired to the Defender via the 13 pin tow socket. The disadvantage with this wiring is that I have to get out of the cab to switch the pump on and off. Does anyone have any experience of using a remote switch that I can control from inside the cab. If so I would appreciate your recommendations.

The pump motor is rated 7 amps at 12volts dc Defender 90XS SW

There are lots of ways you could do this, depending on how complicated you're prepared for it to be. All involve adding something to the sprayer rather than the Defender, to keep it neat and self contained.

One option would be a wireless remote relay (Hella do one that's rated for the load, although I expect there are others), with the relay itself fitted into a waterproof box.

Another would be a regular relay, similarly mounted, with the trigger connection to the side light circuit of the towing connection. That way, you turn on the sidelights to power up the pump.

A third, slightly more involved solution would be a changeover relay with the trigger connected to the reverse light circuit of the tow bar. Briefly select reverse to turn on the pump, select it again to turn it off. Darren

Presumably the sprayer is using the ignition-controlled 12V supply usually used for caravan fridges etc in the 13=pin socket?

If so, why not just wire a manual switch into the supply (or into the circuit actuating the ignition controlled relay which controls the supply)?

Hi Blackwolf. The sprayer pump is connected to a 13pin plug with only two wires, pos and neg that connects into the 13 pin socket on the Defender. I would prefer not to modify the defender wiring if I can get away with it and therefore like the idea suggested by LR Anorak of a wireless remote switch.

Thank you both for your suggestions, I'll do a Google search for a Hella remote switch. Defender 90XS SW

Does the sprayer run as soon as it is plugged into the Defender's socket, or only when the Defender's ignition is switched on?

If the latter you can interrupt the ignition feed as it done by a relay generally fitted in the seat box and the feed taken from the upper dash switches.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Hi Martin,
It is wired into the 12v ign circuit (pins 10 and 11). i need to be able to switch off the pump remotely whilst the engine is still running. Defender 90XS SW

Brilliant Mr. Green

You can modify the ignition supply to pin 10 to add a switch inline.

In your left hand (battery) seat box you should have a relay like this:

(if it is missing the fuse on the side it is likely an aftermarket kit so a different approach would be needed).

Simply remove the fuse and fit a switch on fly-leads and spades on the end, including a fuse sufficient for your pump (i.e. 10A) in the fly-leads.

This would interrupt the supply to the relay and hence the supply to anything downstream.

This gives you a non-intrusive and totally reversible mod to switch your pump off from the cab.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Thanks Martin. This is on my list of "Jobs to do this winter" as I will not be using my sprayer until next spring. I'll let you know if it works but I'm sure it will. Thumbs Up Defender 90XS SW
