Surely, it all depends on how long something takes to break down. If something degrades within a year or so, like a politician's promise, then I think that's ok. But I have to stop Mrs Puddle from throwing glass away, as I read it can take anything from thousands of years to a million years for glass to fully break down. If glitter is made of paper, then it's perfectly fine. However, if it's made of plastic, then we know now that the plastic seems to go on forever...and has just been found in some sea species at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, which I think is over 5 miles down

Yep, sounds like a well thought out decision to me.
This should stop me having a sparkly face when I go to work after dropping the kids off at school  Fixing Land Rovers for over 25 years..........and making excuses to the wife for almost as long

I may be missing the point, but if glitter, which is essentially utterly pointless, destroys marine life by permanently and irreversibly polluting the oceans, the it seems to me that its use should be discouraged.
I bet parents would be quick enough to call for a ban if little Verruca was blinded after getting some in her eye! It'll only be a matter of time before someone produces biodegradable glitter anyway. |

Yes plastics can be harmful to the environment. Now would it be more beneficial if those nursery schools instil into the kids how to use plastics correctly and dispose of them correctly? Plastic drinks bottle. Use reuseable ones rather then disposable ones. Re cycle them properly. We have a gym used by children close to our unit. It is amazing the amount of litter, empty water bottle, empty drinks cans and sweet packages are discarded.. Teach the little darlings and their parents to dispose of litter correctly will do a lot more for the environment then a ban on glitter. Get the nursery schools to teach the 3 R's REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE There again the cynic in me wonders if it was done as a publicity stunt! Brendan |

I was surprised yesterday when the neighbours grandchild handed me a card covered in glitter. and to be told that you can eat the glitter, told the wife and she said "oh yes you have been able to get it for cake decorations for a long time." Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to us off.

Apparently the particular chain in question is very "green" and makes a point of its ethics. The spokesman on the news this morning said that they already prohibit single-use plastic drinks bottles and that sort of thing.
The impression that I formed is that the chain uses its green credentials as a USP, no doubt with many parents dropping the kids off in the posh SUV for a day of ethical play before collecting them later. In these circumstances they would have little choice but to ban glitter until a vegetable-based sustainable bioglitter is available. The poor of kids are probably stuffed full of Traidcraft organic bio-yoghurt all day too. I'd be more impressed if they insisted that the kids walk there rather than being driven. |

I'm glad that this has happened. The more anti-plastic publicity like this the better in my opinion. Unfortunately this is the smallest of drops in the ocean in comparison to plastic waste created by the fashion industry, food packaging industry and others

Pretty much EVERY day I collect our Kids form the after School club...
Both 10 and 6 and almost each day certainly the 6 year old brings out some 'art work' made with paper, boxes, glue, glitter. As already mentioned most days it's far from dry and most of the Glitter ends up on me as they say Daddy can you carry this, then we place it in the car with again most of the contents falling off onto the carpet. For me to hoover at a later date when set... Thing is THEY are made up with these pieces of ART and cannot wait to show mum. What is the world coming to. Banning glitter in the UK but owning guns in USA is ok....
See how made up he is with his Landrover front Its hard to tell but the lights were 3D done from old plastic containers also, ooh and a box on the floor painted & decorated
