@ian
The first 6 months elapsed, then I was going pull it off the road to do the box, but decided I'll tax it as it won't take me long. Fail. It's because I've been fanny'ing around with dimple dies making stuff look pretty...work in progress. Click image to enlarge |

I wouldn't mind if road tax was added to fuel duty, so long as it was at a reasonable level.
I have 3 vehicles, taxed all year round at a cost of £750, but can only drive 1 at a time and only cover a total of 12 000 miles. The least used one costs £0.18 in road tax for every mile driven. The people that might loose out under that system are rural drivers that have to drive everywhere. Driving to work, to school, the shops, the doctor is a necessity, not an option for many. They shouldn't have to pay more. |

Moving road tax to fuel would be self defeating, given the push to electric vehicles. Under the present system, it's only a matter of time and volume before the latter have to start paying road tax. Darren

Yes the lost revenue will have to be made up somewhere. Maybe electricity used to charge vehicles should get a "road fuel" tax and full VAT added to it just the same as petrol and diesel do. Then add on bit extra to cover the lost road tax.
Nissan Leafs wouldn't be so attractive then. |

They would tax air if they thought they could get away with it.

I'm trying really hard not to be negative (honest) but when was the last time any government did anything great? I remember an instance years ago when Austria had a massive amount of wine that was contaminated with large amounts of glycol. A report in a newspaper (still don't know if this is true, mind) said they were pouring it onto roads to keep them from icing, and I thought, we'd never do that because we just wouldn't. It's like the police closing off a road when something trivial happens. I can't imagine any other country does it for a whole bleedin' day! I'm still trying to think of when a British government did something great. We decided to stop the Germans in 1938 - was that the last great thing we did? Putting road tax onto fuel duty is very simple and ensures that if you use the road more, you pay more. Simple - so it won't happen. Trouble is, we're all going electric!
I was surprised they took the tax disc away, I always wanted them to introduce an insurance disc! Now left. |

it wont be long, one of the lads said the same thing about the cars that pay zero tax to 30 quid a year, He said back in 2014 that they will all end up paying. sure enough it happened. Also I noticed that DVLA have pushed the price up, it was £235 last year, now its £245. They have a nasty little habit of increasing the price.
