NAS rear step & towbar
Does anyone here have a NAS step fitted to a Puma 110?

Despite having a couple of Land Rovers with them a while ago I'd like to get a rough idea of the tow hitch mount heights of an NAS step when fitted to a Puma 110 with a standard suspension & tyre setup.

TIA. Steve.

I was wondering the same.

I asked on the G4 forum (as the G4 110s have the NAS rear step fitted) and got varied responses. My concerns were can you use the alko hitch without farting about opening the rear door to put it on and off and what's the height like.

Most everyone seemed to think to tow a caravan (not sure what you are towing and what the towball height is) you need a drop plate.

I got this response from one very helpful chap: -
Quote:
I have a drop plate on my 110 and though not an ALKO hitch the winterhoff hitch which is almost identical clears the closed back door easily. Caravan is fractionally nose up when there is no load in the 110.

and then
Quote:
The height from ground to centre of ball on my 110 is 470mm and the holes on my drop plate move the ball down 60mm from its lowest position on the NAS step.

So a standard 110 USW with non-HD suspension and NAS tow bar would seem to put the centre of the ball, on the lowest setting, at 530mm without a drop plate. Obviously check and check again, YMMV, don't hold me liable blah blah.

Hope this helps
Craig

This is with the standard wheel on the back door set on the higher setting, which is slightly too high for a standard trailer. Set on the lower holes would be better, you could then also have a bigger wheel on the back door and still hitch up.

My puma 110sx utility station wagon fitted with NAS style step.
I suggest that to tow a caravan or trailer with standard height hitch it needs a further drop plate ( needs bolt holes for tow ball about 50 - 75mm lower again to be be level.
I fitted one of the smaller than dixon bate adjustable hitches as on ebay for about £50. Top of fitting fixed flush with step line , alko ball hitch bolted to bottom of the adjustable plate and the two halves of the adjustable hitch in central position gives towed caravan perfect level. Also enables some plowing when offroading !!
Also allows door to open and miss the raised jockey wheel on the caravan .

Thanks chaps. My current standard LR drop plate puts the centre of the 50mm ball at around 520ish which is still a bit high for our new horse trailer. I don't particularly want to go for a slider again, I've had plenty of them before but tend to find the bottom of the fixed drop plate just a bit too low and even with unworn pins still a bit clanky which is why I was thinking about another NAS hoping that the lower height may be between the two. Steve.
