As is well documented on here, the Red Bison loom upgrade is a worthwhile exercise.
However I want to fit some driving lamps too so that's another loom! Decided to make my own combined headlight upgrade and driving lamps loom using 3 relays, the standard Land Rover Dash switch (YUG000540LNF?). Found this lovely little waterproof relay/fuse box that looks ideal: - Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Got mine from Mouser http://www.mouser.co.uk/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=PDM31001ZXM Also bought a load of cable from http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/sect...wall-cable This means I'll have a Red Bison loom and genuine driving lamps loom up for sale soon! |

Hi Steve,
I was going to run a feed from the battery (fused at that end) but I'd welcome a way of connecting it to the alternator for a shorter cable run Do you have any pics of your installation please? Diodes on the coils is sound advice I have a feeling the relays I've ordered have them built in. The bottom of the fuse box has rubber 'bungs' to waterproof the connections: - Click image to enlarge They'll also be getting a liberal dose of silicone grease too |

Headlight Relays:
Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Spotlight Relay: Click image to enlarge They are using the Land Reiziger loom, however, you need to adjust the wiring to suit these relays I have. (Swap trigger and earth feeds due to the Diode.) They aren't waterproof but I don't intend to be wading anyway, the alternator stud and headlight plug after all are not waterproof anyway. They are both fed directly from the 8mm alternator post, the spotlight loom using 6mm2 so very very little voltage drop. It's not to awkward to get at but you do need the torque figure, for the bolt and stud. I'm pretty sure I listed it on here somewhere. There is room I'd say for three ring terminals or two if they are large. Spotlights I am converting over to HID, so will draw a fair bit if power. I'm running LED Noldens for headlights, which are voltage regulated but the loom provides full voltage at charging current with very little losses. The main benefit if you are using LED's is the mA load through the main light switch. As well as the stalk. The Diodes create very very very little delay on flash, at least these do. So little you'd not even notice. I'd definitely recommend Durite, they are very good quality and you do not want cheap Relays on critical items. If anyone wanted these like mine they are rated at 40A each and the P/N is printed on the front of them. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ¥ó ®ó §ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó ¿ðŸ´ó §ó ¢ó ³ó £ó ´ó ¿ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡ªðŸ‡ºðŸ‡¸â›½ï¸ðŸ›¢ï¸âš™ï¸ðŸ§°ðŸ’ª |

Brilliant thank you (no pun intended! ) Looks like a quality job
Looks like a neat installation. The relays are quality items too. I've got Wipac crystal headlights with Nightbreakers so they'll be using around 5A a piece. I think the cable I've ordered is rated at 20A per run so should be little volt drop. The spotlights are Warn LED jobs and they take about 4A so I'll use the same cable for them. The feed to the fuse box from the (now) alternator will be 57A cable via a 40A fuse. Think that should be ok. I'll also have to run a length of cable for the dashboard switch. That's fairky low current in comparison but I'll probably end up using the same wire as I've got a job lot. Thanks again for your advice Cheers, Jason |

Hello All
I am about to install two Auxiliary Driving Lamps (Spot Lights) and wanted to check that my assumptions form the various advice on D2N (thanks) is correct, and I have interpreted everything correctly. I’m installing X2 55W Halogen ‘Spot / Driving’ Lamps with H3 Bulbs...(Boxed and unused Spots intended to be fitted to an XR2 / 3... remember those). I want to have them operate only on High Beam, or when the Main Headlamps are Flashed, with the additional ‘feature’ of being able to ‘isolate’ / switch off the Auxiliary Driving Lamps, via a new ‘LR’ Dashboard X2 Aux Light Switch (for Fog or Driving Lamps)...so I would describe this as a ‘standard set up’. After much (well some) thought I’ve decided not to go with the OEM LR Driving Lamps Loom and Dashboard Switch as this is typically > £135 - £164, and looks to me to be just too expensive for what it is (STC 53208). The LR OEM X2 Aux Light Switch (YUG000540LNF) is around £54.00 on its own, and this again just feels too expensive, even if OEM, I may be proved wrong but currently I'm going down the DIY Route LR Wiring Loom 53208 https://topix.landrover.jlrext.com/topix/service/document/70573 So I’m going to use a ‘factored / cloned’ Switch (as see if it lasts) and my own Wiring Loom and Relay and have 5 questions...for those who might know, or have gone down a similar path... Auxiliary Driving Lamps This wiring Diagram ‘illustration’ appears on D2N a few times... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic552.html?start=18 Switch Fascia / YUG000540LNF Wiring Diagram Click image to enlarge Can i confirm that this wiring arrangement will result is the Driving Lamps working in the following way... 1 The Auxiliary Lights will only be activated when the Main Head Lights are on (switched) to Full Beam and when the Main Headlights are Flashed 2 The Auxiliary Lights can be switched off via the Dash Switch (YUG000540LNF) also... 3 Can I confirm that the Feed / Trigger Wire (No. 86 on Relay) could be taken from the High Beam Warning Lamp Wire behind the TDCi Bashboard Binnacle, this looks to be shown as the Blue – Orange Wire (ref TDCi Driving Lamp Kit LR006815) Click image to enlarge 4 Can I also confirm that the +12V Dash Illumination Wire (No.2 on the X2 Aux Switch) can be taken (connected to) ‘any’ of the Red - Orange feed wires, to other illuminated (similar) Dashboard Switches This is the X2 Aux Lighting Switch I’m going for... 1 - Yes
2 - Yes 5 - No, neither the diode nor the higher rating will give any additional benefit for this application Can't help with 3 and 4, I'm afraid, as I'm not familiar with the wiring colours. Hello guys,
I loose this part of my spotlight kit (I attach a photo). Do you know what is the part number? If not I can build it. As far as I know the connector is the part number YPC10523 but i don't know the section of each wire, maybe 1mm^2. One is black and the other shold be red/orange. Can you help me? Thanks!! |

Yes it is YPC10523, I can supply it: https://www.defender2.net/shop/5-way-defen...6-p71.html A wire size of 0.5mm² will be fine. I can supply YPC10523 with black and red/yellow like original (I don't have red/orange) 0.5mm² wires attached already if you like? Martin 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |
