Which one
The head gasket on the 300tdi is on its way out which although minor is enough of a trigger to get on with a v8 replacement. I’m not up for an LS3 or anything of that ilk, it will either be a 3.5 carb or 3.9efi. I will keep the manual gearbox and the pickup will become a hardtop (ditched the soft top idea). The truck will do about 3k miles a year, a bit of off-road driving when shooting / on the farm. Any clear advantages of one over the other?

Thanks

Paul

3.9 efi as a minimum. Great engine, suits Defender well. I’ve had loads, current daily driver is one in a 110.

Biggest issue is finding them, they’re getting on a bit now.

Agreed ^^^ with Jeremy

My GEMS install was a pain in the electronic dept Laughing though now (right after I finished) you can buy a plug n play harness.
People shun gems because of the complicated install, though it's self learning and it won't start up in a morning and forgotten everything.
Plus there's always advice going free.

I love v8's, I will go LS, because it's cheaper than an Audi R8.

Yep, I was lucky enough to be able to compare a 3.5 and 3.9 side by side last week, just listening to them. The 3.9 sounded much nicer to my ear!!

"There is no substitute for cubic inches", or as they say nowadays, "There's no replacement for displacement"!

IMV the pinnacle of RV8s is the Thor 4.0 as it has pretty much every modification that LR could think of.

Electronics wise, I'd just hook up a MegaSquirt using the factory crank sensor and coil packs and job's done. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Time to get hunting then. A Disco2 seems like a good place to start and all the ancillaries will be there.

Hi Huttopia

I cant speak to the advantages, but, I have a fully rebuilt 4 litre V8, the work was done by RPI, it is a complete engine and is currently fitted with an Edelbrock carb

I bought it last year when I had 2 different RRC projects on the go, and its now surplus to requirements

Its in Redditch which may not be far from you?

The problem with an older V8 is they are not especially strong engines, especially if they havent been properly looked after (reg oil and filter changes etc). The one fitted to my 65k miles RR was fit for scrap

If of any interest - please PM me. thx Dan
