Oh yeah, nice and clean. Until it isn't. Try harder people. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

The descriptions are changing. No longer Environmentally Friendly, now 'Zero Emissions'. In other words, we've shifted the pollution into somebody else's back yard. Good for city folk.

^^^ I noticed last week that some of the council vans in Chamonix have the words 'Zero Emissions' plastered all over them. Frankly I think it's not a little disingenuous. Whilst over 70% of electricity production in France is Nuclear, 17% renewable, that still leaves 10% fossil burning production. Until they're at 100% there's no way of proving that the electricity came from a given source, so therefore cannot be 'Zero Emission'. What's more they're made in Northern France, about 700km away, so how did they get here? Back of a oil burning lorry one assumes. And this all ignores the fact that by anyone's reckoning it would be hard to claim that Nuclear rods and Lithium batteries are environmentally friendly. They may not produce CO2 or NOX but we have no idea what they'll be doing to the planet when they're past their shelf lives; merely emissions of a different kind. So, until a car is truly produced using zero emissions, delivered without emissions, runs without emissions produced in its fuel supply and leaves no legacy emissions when scrapped, then it cannot reasonably be claimed as a zero emission car. By that reckoning, no electric cars are zero emission. Monsieur Le Grenadier

^^^"The long and the short of it, getting shot of a perfectly good vehicle to replace it with a 'zero emission' I would think would actually increases the pollution in the world as the production and distribution of any new vehicles will have a far higher carbon footprint than running an existing vehicle."
I read somewhere that in certain demographics/regions, perfectly good cars are being scrapped (or sold on, therefore requiring an increase in production), more quickly than has been the case in the past as people jump on the Electric bandwagon, so you're absolutely right. It is very easy to snipe and criticise , much harder to come up with solutions.
Doing nothing isn't an option. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-41678533 If you push the pollution to a central generating point (power station ) it is far easier to keep clean than millions of small pollution centres ( engines ) . I don't think a ban on the ice by 2040 can be considered knee jerk. Although the premise seems to be that batteries will be very different by then. We shall see. No, I agree entirely JJ. You are right. We all need to do our bit.
The uncomfortable truth is that we will all need to stop travelling, we all need to stop going on holiday, we all need to stop being consumerists - swapping our phones because the new one has better camera....... but most people don't want to listen to the truth. We, as in you, me and most of the people living in the western world, are using more of the earths resources than we should. The other uncomfortable truth is that any politician that stands up and tells us that we won't be having our summer holiday because it is bad for the environment will have a pretty time limited career. I think what I am trying to get to is that sometimes, we can't sort a problem out be slinging money at it, and sometimes, it actually makes the problem worse. I'm sure no one is going out of their way to hurt the environment, and they are doing the best they can, but how long ago was it that the good people of the UK were encouraged to buy Diesel engined cars because they were 'green' but actually they were not. Another knee jerk reaction without taking a look at the bigger picture. I can't argue with you JJ. You are spot on. |

I agree something has to be done, but as someone pointed out in another thread the electricity grid isn't capable of supplying electricity to charge cars at every house in a street only about 3 in every ten houses. There is no simple solution but does need gradual change. James

Getting back to the OP, I was told by a senior Police officer for Surreys motorways that their standing orders in the event of an electric car fire are to keep clear, even if somebody is trapped inside. This is because of the unpredictable risk of the batteries exploding. Darren

I entirely agree with JJ.
It's better if we call cars like my BMWi3 'no emissions at point' - in other words, as it moves, as it exists, it doesn't emit toxic chemicals (a trace). Electric is the future, whether people like it or not. The ICE will die, and we'll either have EVs through batteries or hydrogen. If the good people at tokamakenergy.co.uk come good then we can all look forward to clean air AND cheap electricity. Rashers is also spot on, but it's a big no-no to the majority of people. Now left. |

no car is eco friendly etc, For a car to be eco friendly it would have to be pedal driven I would have thought, Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Procta, you're correct, but they've been around for years, the problem has been with safety legislation, seat belts, air bags etc. just a bit more development required and they should be ok! http://bit.ly/1cbHNCy
