To monitor engine or transfer case oil temperature?
Hi Everyone!

There is such a wealth of knowledge on this forum, so I was hoping to pick your brains..

I am in the process of fitting a Madmad EMS1 monitor. It looks like a great piece of kit. However, there are only two temperature sensors; one for the coolant and one for either the engine or transfer case oil.

If you have to pick to monitor either engine or transfer case oil temperatures - which would you choose and why?
If you're monitoring the coolant temperature, what are the chances the engine oil is going to be higher than it should be?

On a side note, I have an overdrive fitted to my TD5. For this, I have an 'analogue' temperature gauge mounted, but I think that it is accurate due to the proximity of the fluid-filled cable to the exhaust. This is why I am leaning towards monitoring the TC over the engine oil temp.

Thanks in advance!

Why not contact Brian at Madman as he is based in Krugersdorp in the north of South Africa.

He is local to you and used to your local environment...If you need his phone number drop me a PM

Personally, I’d go for engine oil temp.

I think the larger lt230 sump can be had with a port for a temperature sensor,if you don’t have one already! They don’t fit Puma,s Big Cry

Hi all,

Thanks for getting back to me.
I've just got off the phone with Madmad Soth Africa, who were incredibly helpful.

The Oil Temperature Sender included with the Kit is intended for the transfer box. It is to be located in place of the huge blanking plug on the passenger side of the LT230.

The idea is that with EGT and coolant temperature readings, you have a pretty good idea of what is going on with the engine, without needing to measure Engine oil temp as well.

However, it is possible to monitor the engine oil temperature, but you'd have to do so through the sump /sump plug as one needs 'moving oil' to get an accurate reading.

As a side note. It is also possible to have multiple temperature sensors wired to a physical 'on/on' switch that can be manually toggled between in the cab of the vehicle.

I battled to find any info on this - so I hope that this helps Smile

Freddie, I've had a Madman in my Puma since I bought it new in 2010.

On their recommendation, it was setup to monitor:

EGT
Engine oil pressure
Coolant Temp
Transfer box Temp

Oil pressure is more important that oil temperature, so make sure you set the alarm at 1.0 bar - that will give you enough warning should there be a sudden oil leak.

Warning levels:
Coolant at 95C, transfer box at 110C, and EGT at 550C

I also recommend that you do a decat, EGR blank, and fit a bigger intercooler if you have the money. And for Xmas, get a remap - BAS or Alive Thumbs Up --
