Did it October half term with the kids and my Dad. Excellent trip with fantastic autumnal colours. Stayed in hotels, lodges and other stuff. Fantastic route - Inverness across to the west, then up the west coast, and around the top corner is definitely the best bit. Did from halfway along the top to John-o-Groats and most of the way down the east coast in a day, which was about right. Added a day by doing a tour of Skye too. Great route, good roads, fantastic views, and diverse scenery from loch side drives to moorland wastes to mountain passes. Nothing a car can't do, but feels very expeditionary regardless. Did it in the Disco.

I've done most of if, just not all in one go. Also worth skipping the west coast bit and just go straight through the middle.
For 'proper' north, give Sheltand a 30 years ago, would have been shot before getting this close: Click image to enlarge [ |

When in June are you going? Had hoped to be going to Norway but have had to scale back to a week in Scotland first week in June. If you see a Keswick green 90 and a 110, give us a wave.
Went to Edinburgh uni and in the summer of my final year (2004) did a charity rally some guys in my year organised. 24 hour treasure hunt from the Edinburgh to John o Grote's, east coast, west coast and loads in between. Did it with one of my mates in his MGF. Hardly saw another car (apart from other participants - one of the better off guys borrowed his dad's brand spanking new Range Rover and shredded a tyre on a rock). Absolutly breath taking scenery - but hell the sea is cold. https://instagram.com/bentheoandrews |

Was thinking about going to do this in the summer on the motorbike and camping - currently put off by the thought of the midges!

Just completed the North Coast 500 albeit in my sons Disco 4. Midges long gone so wild camping. Highly recommended especially the west and north coast sections, stunning views and at this time of year hardly another car to be seen. Camped near Balnakell Beach which required a beach and dune drive.
