Front Suspension Turrets
Hello folks,

I've just obtained, for a very good price, a set of essentially new, take-off, springs and shocks that I intend to fit to my 90. These will replace rusty springs of unknown vintage and reasonably new but rubbish Britpart shocks, with the intention of stopping it bottoming out on speed bumps!

Anyway, whilst doing so, I also want to replace all of the associated bolt-on hardware with new galvanised versions (turrets, spring seats, retaining rings, etc) and for the front turrets I'm considering an open frame design in place of the standard cylindrical ones. I'm taken with the ones from Glyn Lewis but I've also seen much cheaper galvanised tubular versions on eBay and wonder whether the price difference is worth it. I can even buy a complete kit that includes galvanised standard turrets for around half of the cost.

I'm not building a challenge truck - it is essentially a standard vehicle on which I'm just trying to design out some of the obvious limitations of the original design. So, is the extra cost of the Glyn Lewis kit worth it? Conversely, are there any drawbacks of the open frame design in normal use?

Also, has anybody got any experience of the Britpart kit shown above? I generally have a healthy wariness about Britpart products but know that some of their less mechanical bits can be ok. Darren

Personally, I hate the standard LR turret design. Prefer to see if things are rusting away...

I have had the Gwyn Lewis turrets and they are excellent. I now have a set of tubular turrets that are galvanised and painted black. Do the job perfectly.

I have a set of the galvanised standard ones on my 90 - no issues other than needing to drill out galv from the mounting holes before fitting. However they were cheap so not really bothered.

I've put Gwyn Lewis ones on the 110, biggest advantage I can see is that one can remove/refit shocks without removing the turret etc. too, plus the ease of seeing/cleaning everything. Being able to grip the upper shock body for tightening/undoing the top shock fixings is useful too.

I would go for the latter.

Actually, I've just realised that the price difference is a red herring, as I hadn't read the Glyn Lewis website properly Rolling Eyes Darren

Gwyn Lewis produced equipment is very well made and, for the quality, excellent value for money. I had his turrets fitted along with OME shocks to make replacing the shocks easier next time. I have the Puma serviced at his garage and have seen for myself the attention to detail, quality of materials and high standard of workmanship that goes into all his products.

Gywn lewis for me. Great design means you can change shocks without having to remove the spring! Saves a lot of time!

Didn't pay anything near that for mine, they had a couple of sets with a few chips on them. 4 years on still like new.
