Sticking vanes is fairly easy to diagnose. I had a similar problem which tended to happen at high revs as opposed to high temperatures.
The vanes are actuated by a rod which you can see when looking at the turbo. You don't need to take the shield off or anything. Take the circlip off the actuator and move by hand. They should move really freely as if there is virtually no resistance. Be careful of taking the circlip off mind as they have a habit of flying across the workshop - never to be seen again. If you aren't sure which bit to take off, come back and I'll take a picture Dave |

Thanks V8 Bobber.
Presumably if this is a temperature related issue I need to compare a hot turbo with a cold turbo. Looks like burnt fingers are on the way! How did you cure your problem - was it mechanical (due to dirt / corrosion) or an electrical issue? |

No it's evident even when it's cold as it's usually a build up of carbon on the vanes.
I seem to remember i did try it when it was as hot as I could bear mind. I took mine apart and rebuilt it with the innards of another with a broken flange which I bought off eBay. It worked fine but for piece of mind I bought a recon turbo as in the big scheme of things they're not expensive. I cleaned the innards up with Mr Muscle oven cleaner (honestly works a treat to clear up the carbon). It doesn't sound exactly the same circumstances as mine though. See how you get on Dave |

It could be the infamous Volume Control Valve on the fuel pump.

The cylinder head temperature sensor will momentarily cut power and give the symptoms that you describe, with no fault codes, if the water level is a bit low. Simple but worth checking and topping up if necessary. If this does sort it the next step is to look for a slow water leak.
Hope it's this simple! |

Hello Shropshiredefender - sadly the water level is perfect I don't think this is the problem.

Hi V8bobber
Still no nearer finding what is wrong. The main clue has to be that it is temperature dependant. I have checked the ease with which you can move the turbo vanes and they are free when both hot and cold. Could it be the actuator? Maybe the VCV is at fault but short of replacing it how do I check it? |

You can't check it except by replacing it, unfortunately, it is uncheckable.

It is a pity that I cant check the VCV before replacing it. Do I need to go back to a standard map before I can change it or can I do the work and the re-calibration with the new map?

From what I've read its back to standard map. Up to temp then a relearn for the VCV. Then put the remap back on.

I've replaced my VCV at least twice and have never gone back to a standard map to do so. After 7 years of inactivity it is very unlikely that my EGR valve would still work, so a standard map would be asking for trouble. The non-standard map has never caused an issue on recal.
