Husband of an old work colleague of mine used to work at Marchwood military port & told a story about someone getting rather too "enthusiastic" with a train of Sankeys to the point where the end ones flipped over... interview without coffee followed!

Now that looked like fun, highly illegal on UK roads.
Here a question about towing trailers. Artic tractor unit towing 40foot trailer towing a caravan. Is it legal? give explanation for your answer. Some on here I suspect will know the correct answer. Don't make old people mad. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to ![]() Richard |

That sounds like a circus/fairground rig. Registered showmen get exemptions which include the option to tow more than one trailer. |

Exemptions from a normal Operators Licence, commonly referred to as Showmans licence, although that's not really a 'thing'. Darren

Showmans licences allow two trailers to be towed on the public highway and also there is an agricultural exemption allowing two agricultural trailers to be towed. Farmers also are restricted on road speeds.
There can be a bit of a grey area with farms because if an articulated trailer is being towed using a dolly then that can count as two trailers unless the locking handle has been disabled on the fifth wheel coupling by being welding up or bolted up. |

I always wondered what the tow jaw was for on my 1953 Brockhouse (yes, they made "Sankeys" too.) ![]() Click image to enlarge |

It is also permitted for recovery purposes but plans are afoot to change it to "a place of safety" only |

I have few regrets in my life, but if there were two of them the first would be selling "The Duke" of Argyll 300tdi Discovery. Loved that car. The second would be selling my sankey trailers, just superb to tow, off road and live with.
![]() ![]() I just need some off road parking... |
