V8- Value for money.
Just sitting in Audi having Mrs Grenadier's Audi serviced and they have the new RS5 in the showroom, fully pimped. 127k€ OTR Shocked

Suddenly makes a LS3 V8 upgrade, plus big brake kit, fast Road suspension, some sporty kit (Recaros and Momo) plus maybe a sound upgrade, double din and leather trim, look extremely good value. Even done by a 3rd party such such as Twisted, as opposed to DIY, perhaps £70k from new or £40k upgraded, that represents very good value. Probably more fun as well. Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

You really can't compare the two at all, the RS6 I was in was an act of god (RS5 should be similar).

They really are like chalk and cheese, the only thing they share is the fact that neither makes any financial sense! 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

The RS6 was 177k€.

They are entirely differene cars, agreed, but bang for buck I wonder how much value you get out of a premium (not prestige) brand Coupé or Estate when they starting reaching these prices. Porsche, Ferrari, Aston, McClaren etc I get it, but Audi (even though we own one) not really. I'd never look a gift-horse in the mouth and turn down an RS5/6 if offered, and if I was ever in the league to buy one, I'd certainly consider a Porsche-munching estate that I can chuck my bike in.

But if we're honest about what the RS5 actually brings to the party, I don't think it's worth double that of the V8 Defender. It's not iconic, it's not exclusive, it's not (that) rare etc etc and given when and how we can use these performance cars, very few RS5 owners will ever tackle a track day in theirs, or even get to the 155mph limiter, so what do they actually get for their money? An amazing noise, amazing acceleration up to (perhaps) 100mph, four comfy seats, a superb infotainment system and dashes of carbon all over the place. All in a fairly mute package that looks like most other cars. The V8 Defender could offer much the same, (Same sound, similar acceleration, same space and some hooligan spirit etc), but for HALF the price.

So no, you can't compare directly, if someone drove both back-to-back, on a track, fully insured, helmet on, cage in and let loose. But day to day as a traffic light hero, for cruising along the M3 at 90mph, or for someone who loves to rev the engine and 'hear the note' I'm not sure it's worth the difference. The only advantage as I see it would be living with it day-to-day as a Def is not for everyone, and perhaps long-distance driving. But is that worth double for a mass-produced, non-prestige car? Nope. I'd prefer to get the Def specced with a V8 and then buy a Disco4 HSE. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I think you hit the nail on the head, the RS series is for people who can afford a Ferrari/supercharged Range Rover...etc and want the performance/luxuary but don't want the attention that it brings.

The RS series depreciates so hard because of the points you mention, the original RS2 and RS6 have a cult following but i'm not sure about any of the other models? 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

whilst I love a defender, and am spending plenty on my Range Rover restoration including a nice rebuilt V8, I dont think you can compare at all.

In any objective sense these fast Audis and similar are far far superior cars than a V8 defender will ever be.

ride / handling / nvh / gadgets / safety / braking etc to name a few areas

a Defender is more characterful, more personal and a more fun project though.

I wouldnt buy an RS audi new - but I did buy an RSQ3 3 years old though..similar size to a 90, 340bhp out the box with a nice noise (ok 5 cylinders not 8 but still) and a very good Q car

there is a reason why most journalists say the Golf R is the best car on the market performance for £, and thats because the law of diminishing marginal returns kicks in and more £ buys you less and less improvement

Personally if I had that money I'd get a Normal 110 v8, get a nice rebuilt specced out chevy 350 and do any mechanical or braking upgrades and then you have a fun powerful v8 at a fraction of price. Thumbs Up 1999 Land Rover Defender 110 td5 station wagon

That is a bit steep...

We do have a RS4; and as a car goes, its magnificent. doesn't feel very special to drive at all tho. its just good at everything.

The 'Sunday' car we have is as quick if not quicker than the rs4 and it's such a nicer thing to drive.. makes you feel special where the audi doesn't.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with having a car pascked with both brutal speed and a lot of common sense, and as an 'Audi Man' would always consider an RS of some sort. And I know they're not a like for like replacement, I was merely trying to point out that actually for half the price I feel you get actually more than just half the fun. IMHO. Lots of options out there, it was just as I mull over a V8 upgrade, and then see a factory V8 for what would be triple the total cost of my DCPU once upgraded, I felt the 'value', £'s/fun was excellent in comparison.

And LikeOMG, you've dangled the carrot, what's the 'Sunday Driver'? There seems to be a strong correlation on these threads between two brands, so I am guessing some flavour of Porsche 911? Monsieur Le Grenadier
