I've previously read (no real experience) that 285 wide does start to adversely affect handling, but if few motorway miles may not be a problem. A lot will argue narrower tyres are better off road to cut through the mud, but again depends on use.
285 are 834mm high, 265 are 804mm high so former gives a little more clearance beneath axle the latter is same as standard fit. I'd stick with 265's on a 90 personally.

JOW - Thanks for your informative reply . Thats exactly the type of input I was looking for . I had my suspicions that handling may be compromised . Think I will opt for the 265's .

Apologies if obvious but 285's would be detrimental to turning circle especially with Boosts?

What annoys me is that although Cooper do make the ST maxx in 255/85/16 they do not sell it in the UK. Sucks. Would be a very popular tyre choice I suspect.
I did see the STT Pros on a Disco2 last month, in 285 as well. Aggressive, Big 'n Bouncy spring to mind... They looked beautiful. |

i didn't reply to this as i thought it was specific to the tyre mentioned but it is in fact a size/performance question then despite stating you didnt want size bits stated. that assumed:
i am currently running 238.85, 265.75s and 285.75 all BFG ATs on Defenders plus 255.85 BFG MT on a 90 ok - so i run both your specific sizes on a 90. the 285 being taller suits the puma gearing well, meaning more use in 1st etc and less revs at higher speed for my specific vehicle (1.4 t box) 265s i run on a 90 tdi, they are a great improvement in handling over the 235 for similar heights but are a bit of a compromise on width for off road, too wide i think. likewise the 285s handle even better than the 265s on road but off road on typical wet grassy fields they are not as good as the 265 which are not as good as the 235s (all ATs) which are beaten as you would expect by the MTs being more aggressive even though it is wider. my tdi i don't think would like the 285s for height or width. Scrub steer is not great either if you fit spacers to improve lock with the wider tyres. All mine are fitted to std boosts without spacers. Yes lock suffers but its a 90 and you learn to cope. Vehicle came with a 35mm lift and 235s just don't fill the arches. If i could get a BFG 255.85 AT i would have it. So my answer is based on sizes which i didn't think you wanted initially but it appears you do. The actual pattern and performance i don't run them but we were doing some testing with them on a D2 on muddy tracks and they do seem pretty good. So what size will I buy then for these 16" boosts ? 235's , 255's or 265's ?

Debating the stt pro's tyre size myself recently and edging towards the 235’s as I quite like the look of a narrower tyre on the 90. I'm not 100% decided yet though and 265 is still an option. Hoping to see them on a Defender at the LRO show on Saturday lol.
