Djcla. I've read your post. As I understand it Defenders were sold with 265/75R16s as standard for many years but changed to 235s when there was a supply problem with the 265s.
My Defender is used mainly on tarmac so I'm wondering if the wider tyre might be better. I don't want to get a worse turning circle though! 2005 Defender 110 Td5 Special Vehicles Station Wagon Zambezi Silver With Black Roof And Black Wheel Arches/Eyebrows. |

There isn't a whole lot of difference between 235/85 and 265/75, I would base your decision on what you prefer the look of, if its just 95% normal tarmac use.
Just bear in mind that some tyres are significantly heavier than others, Toyo Open Country MT is a very heavy tyre for example. If you ever want to do an overlanding trip, BFG AT take some beating. 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW 1956 Series 1 Hard-top 1958 Series 1 Soft-top |

Which is bad if the tire is heavy. I'm thinking of buying next Toyo MT 255 85 16. Is it good tire? defender 110 td5 2006

It's a great tyre, i'm going to get some myself! However if you're going to use your defender for 95% tarmac then a heavy duty tyre is not needed. 1993 200 Tdi 90 CSW

Defenders have swapped between 235 and 265 as standard fitment several times since 1994 when alloy wheels were first offered. If you fit 265 tyres on standard rims then you'll have to adjust the lock stops further out than for 235's, which will in turn reduce your turning circle. This can be solved with wheel spacers if you're so inclined. On my previous 110, I had 265 tyres on Boost alloys with 30mm spacers and the turning circle was superb. I ran 265/75 AT2 on my 90 for years as a summer/road tyre & they were fantastic. They were also pretty good off road too, however, during the winter when it got a bit muddy the additional width made the tyres float rather than cut on the mud so I got a second set of 235/85 mud terrain as the narrower more aggressive tread cuts through the surface and generates grip rather than spinning up like the 265 ATs did.
As with any tyre, it's what you want it to do if you're choosing it for a particular use in mind, or how it looks if you just have a road going motor. Incidentally, ran the 265s with lock stops adjusted but no spacers & never worried about turning circle for 16 years - got a 110 now & that is a different story altogether... |
