Sim card for Range Rover (to use the Traffic data?)
Hello

My dads just been asking me about sim cards. His New RR apparently does not have live traffic as standard (my 3 year old tomtom does this for free)

He needs a Sim card I guess with a data tariff? would this have to be a monthly contract?

I've recently bought a GiffGaff one for my tracker but its been less than 30 days so far so not sure how the top up works at the end of 30 days. I don't need data for mine either?

Anyone with a RR think evoke, disco probably the same?

I did think about using his phone to tether to the car? not sure if this is possible or how much data it would use off his normal contract?

Its a bit of a pain, but the car has 2 sims (depending on exactly the model)...there is a reason why LR dont use the old traffic system, i forget what...ill ask and report back

They have 2 sims technically one is so that you cant access for all the core features etc and the one they now expect you to buy for traffic - although its not just traffic, it gives in car wifi, access to some features within the maps, web interface etc...effectively its like a tablet with some features removed.

The problem i had was i wasnt having another contract and PAYG expires too soon and i dont use any of the data allowance (traffic uses almost nothing)

WHen i ran it i had an ee sim Mike

You need a data sim not a normal phone sim Mike

I'm pretty sure GiffGaff's sims don't expire as long as they are in regular use, even if the usage is tiny. depending on the data usage, either just loading some credit with auto top up enabled or a monthly data only Goody Bag should do the trick. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

I use a GiffGaff SIM in my cheapo tracker as do a few others on here. The data has no expiry as long as you use some occasionally. Not sure how often you have to use it though.

See this thread for details http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54093.html

@Dobby, do you have a link to the EE £1/week SIM please? I'd prefer to use them as they have better coverage in the areas I go to.

Cheers,

Jason

Interested in the EE deal for my dad at a £1 a week,

Sorted my tracker sim on Giffgaff I needed to top up £10 then the credit stays on according to the e-mail back from giffgaff

How much data would 100mb or 150mb give you using the traffic would this be enough to make it work? on the minimum tariff?

Seems odd that a car such as this you have to pay extra for this feature?

Even more so when he had a call from Landrover while in Europe on holiday just checking where he was as they say they do monitor the journeys. When he checked on the app it had EVERY journey, speed, distance, time logged he has ever done in the car....

He can turn the car heating on and other bits from home but it does not have traffic which imo would be more useful?

thanks

They must be on tricky data protection ground, tracking their customers movements like that. Big brother us indeed watching! 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

JLR - this sim isnt for that side of the system thats built in SIM

All cars now have to have the SOS stuff and JLR cars have trackers built in, so i can see where the car is, lock it, start it control the climate etc - this sim is not that and there are agreements for it (or you can not spec the NCO)

You can turn that feature off

This sim is options and does other things...in answer to the how much used - so little its a joke. didnt touch 100mb in 90 days Mike

I found ee had good coverage. But ive been really impressed with Vodafone recently, they have upgraded their network.

Also not in my RR its 3G not 4G

Remember its a wifi hotspot for the car too, which might be useful Mike

I use a Lyca mobile sim for my tracker, just need to top up £5 every 90 days or it will expire. So I'm running the tracker sim for £20/yr.

Guess what I forgot to do though! Embarassed New sim was needed! Embarassed Embarassed James
