On Saturday me and my dad attended a winching course at Rockingham Castle run by Ed Cobley of Protrax.
Was great fun and we would recommend it to any one who has a interest in winching Here is a link to a Northants4x4 members gallery who was there. https://picasaweb.google.com/1077517737542...irectlink# Jack |

its more if the block ends up in the corner of the shackle or the shackle twists round so that the force is running across it rather than up and down it. just wondering more than anything.

The thing is was this picture taken after they were told to do it the correct way and they got it wrong, or was it a case of 'ok lads rigg up and lets see what mistakes you have made' or perhaps this is the way they were told to do it. 130's have feeling's as well you know

In this case better to put the sling in the bow as; if the shackle travels along the sling the pin won't be unscrewed by the friction with the sling, with a proper load rated shackle such as a crosby the side loading at 90 degrees reduces the SWL by 50% Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Willy I get what you mean but how is the shackle going to travel down the sling assuming the shackle is pointing toward the winch and its at the lowest point on the sling ? not sure from the pic why the sling/tree strap is through the shackle in the way and not the looped ends.
if the shackle is de-rated to half its SWL if the load on it i high due to the vehicle being bogged etc then it wouldnt take a huge amount to cause a failure? I know this is all hypothetical but I find it interesting (i need to get out more ) |

True Mike that was the only reason I could see, That looks like a 4.75 ton shackle which will have a safety factor of 6 to 1 so 28.5 tonne breaking load so even if you cock it up by pulling with a side load you are still safeish, the idea behind SWL is to allow for fools and damage. Unfortunately you still see unrated shackles in use by 4x4 owners which as you know can have disastrous results. I think basically the sling was the weak link in that photo and it wouldn't really matter which way round the shackle was. If any one wants rigging manuals etc just PM me Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Hi
We were told bow always on the strap by Ed. It is a 4.75 ton tested shakle and a 14 ton strap. the weakest point in this rig is the Defender tie down points the strap is fixed to David |

I would of put the pin to the strop and bow to the snatch block. Strange how there is 2 trains of thought here an both think they are right.
Where did everyone learn their offroad craft? Was it taught or just through passage of info from more experience people. Both sets of people can't be right, there must be a right and a wrong way or the design of the bow shackle wouldn't be needed and you could just use a D shackle? 110 D250 SE HT 110 USW SOLD RRE HSE Dynamic Gone, wife killed it VOLVO XC60 R Dynamic with some toys Polaris RZR 900XP SOLD |
