TD5 Major Fluid Loss
Hi guys, wondering if you could help diagnose the following.

Over the weekend, we topped our coolant expansion tank up in the TD5 to the proper level. It was driven 200 miles and it's dropped 2 or 3 inches. However, the vehicle has also started losing a lot of fluid on the left hand side of the truck. It's hard to spot the leak, we've checked the radiator up front and this looks ok. There are 3 definite patches of an oily like substance, presumably coolant? It smells quite ammonia like. Drips are forming under the left hand side of the radiator (as if you were sat in cab) and directly underneath the swivel housing on the axle. There also appears to be some leaking down the bulkhead at the rear of the front left wheel arch. Here's hoping this is just a radiator, heater matrix or hose split and not some sort of horrible head gasket failure.

Any ideas? Apologies if this has been posted before. Editor of FunRover - One blog. Read it!

Check Rad, top hose clips, heater matrix pipes, and core plug thing in cylinder head above exhaust manifold

Hi Funrover,

T1G UP's suggestion is a good one as it does sound like you have coolant spraying everywhere. Also check where it fits onto the outlet elbow. It is rather close to the exhaust and gets perished, it was on mine.

I had a recent coolant leak and it was from the coolant plug between cylinders 3 + 4 on the exhaust side, look under the exhaust manifold with a torch. My plug was loose.

Another place to look as suggested to me is the oil cooler, again under the exhaust manifold and bolted to the block.

Here is the thread I started. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic5511.html

Be sure to let us know what it was for future reference.
