Well it's all a mystery to me, i connected my atric unit ( I have an alive remap) and it showed two error codes B1206 and P0504, tried to find out what these are and one seems to do with brake lights and 1206 is eic circuit open(?) though i have struggeld to find a definitive list and used the gunson std one. Anyway i cleared both of these and now the ultragauge is showing the inlet air temp again. I wish I had a clue how that all works!

Inlet temp showed by the ultragauge (I got one as well) is the MAF sensor reading, if it stopped showing the temp it is most likely your MAF needs to be replaced.

can anyone confirm - would it be MAF or MAP(T) that provides the air temp?
does the MAF just do flow rate and the MAP does pressure and temp? did you replace anything / has it been ok since? mine was showing -3C the other day when clearly it wasn't. |

That would be the MAF sensor then, is it still showing -3? Would definitely replace it.

no it's back to normal
it was like it for an hour or so. restarted engine and back to normal. I thought I'd seen somewhere that the MAP sensor was actually a MAP(T) sensor - ie T being for temperature? I guess if I disconnect either and look at the guage I'll know for sure. I'm hoping it's a sensor on it's way out or just a freak occurrence and not a damaged loom? |

thank you Sadi,
assuming I've read that right the MAF is just that - mass air flow and NOT temperature. |

The MAF sensor should read ambient air temperature too - :
http://www.boosttown.com/electrical_system/maf_sensor.php It may have some algorithm built in - once the air goes through the air filter it may well not be the same as true ambient any longer. The UG should give you 2 readings - one for ambient (MAF) (no other sensors from there to intercooler) - and one post intercooler. After driving some distance and stopping - you will notice ambient/MAF reading rising due to heat soak. This reading drops when you restart driving. If you have a buddy with similar vehicle - you can maybe swop MAF sensors and note the result. Specific MAF cleaners: CRC & Liqui Moly. As noted in the 1'st - there may be problems in other sensors - not necessarily the MAF. Hope you get to solve the problem. https://www.familyhandyman.com/automotive/.../view-all/ |

so it would appear the ultraguage is regularly showing inlet temps of approx. 10-20C below actual.
not sure what / how much impact this will be having on the engine? |

Hi Caterham,
I have the UG Bluetooth and the BAS Bluetooth dongles - and use the BAS one more often - so the above observations were with the BAS readouts on smartphone. But know from previous experience that the readings of the 2 corresponded very well. But will now measure again on the UG BT and report back. My experience with them was that intake temp.1 was always higher than ambient - should it in fact be recorded by the MAF sensor - there could probably be explanatory reasons for that. I removed the "duckbilled" air intake that connects airbox and side fender to create more space in the engine bay - and also planning to install a Provent catch can there - as on the opposite sitde a second diesel filter will be installed. After removing the above I found the intake temperature 1 to be much closer to ambient. Currently searching some articles re air temperature just before it enters the intercooler - but haven't found the correct one yet. But stumbled on some interesting stuff where racing Diesel engines run EGT's of 1200 deg C - and they may start worrying at EGT's of 1400 deg C. What I'm looking for - is air temperature between where PCV hose joins the post airbox hose and the turbo, and between turbo and intercooler (just before entering IC) - to get an idea of the cooling capacity of the air-to-air IC. |

The intake temperature is definitely supplied by the MAF, when you unplug the MAF it reads about -40C.
My IAT is pretty much bang on the outside temperature apart from when I've been driving for a number of hours at high (in the 30s) exterior temperatures. After a few hours in those conditions it will be reading about 10C too high. |
